I don't work for Asda but for any company I've worked for you apply for holiday then it either gets approved or denied. Which I assume is the same with any company. Some companies don't allow holiday when they are due to have busy periods.

Wouldn't it have been best to do it in the other order, apply for holiday then book it?
  • i agree but as holiday is before good friday and asda holidays are determind buy your manager and not the overall manager, also no leaway i feel sorry for all ASDA employee,s as a manager myself if you bok it a month in advance and i can cover it ie wedding etc i always offer a compromise

    Not really a consumer vent?

uktim29 is right, it is completely at the discretion of any employer.

HI, little off topic but my daughter works for Currys and they make all there staff at her branch work Boxing day, New Years day and easter monday no exceptions and it is near enough impossible to get time off from mid december to mid jan apart from your normal allotted days...Sometimes its down to the branch........I would ask asda again and look at the handbook.

In most of the companies I have worked for there was always a lot of competition for school and bank holidays. The policies were always that we needed to get management approvement for holidays, and for popular times they were often refused even if no other staff members were away.

I don't recall ever being in a position to book a holiday without requesting the time off first.

  • Well it's quite true that Asda bully their staff. I work for an Asda and see this kind of terrible behaviour going on, as well as other things that are downright stupid and questionable from a legal standpoint. Asda Managers from what I have seen from a few store samples seem to relish picking on people who are young and slightly immature, this is a magnet for an Asda Manager to come and show them, what a big clever person they are by belittling them, they are capricious to the extent of being abnormal. I notice they seem to like bullying if possible on the shop floor to show everyone how smart they are!! I am quite amazed really that Asda does not send out a poster for Manager's reminding them how to treat members of staff and WARNING them they may be dismissed for such actions. Instead as I saw last month the focus is................

Well the focus is Blogging your way into trouble? There is a card positioned on all table and walls and any place you avert your eyes...it states to be careful what you right on the internet as you can get dismissed for it?!!

Well in my mind if Asda were doing nothing wrong in the first place what have they to worry about?? An honest man/woman has nothing to fear from the truth they should embrace it as it is their ally. This adage applies to companies as well as individuals; a company is just a group of individuals.

However I truly think that the people at the top the real brains and innovators know nothing of this situation. I think it is hidden from them and they really see everything as running smoothly.

Here is how it goes in regards to retail.

You work in a store as a member of staff.....if a an area manager is coming to view the store that particular store is either told in advance they are going to be visited by an area manager (which defeats the object as far as I can see) hardly a surprise random visit. Or by simple logic lets says an Asda store in an area is visited...they assume all other stores within a reasonable distance are going to be visited...so the manager or somebody else tells all other stores in the general area!!!

Based on this brief explanation I see no reason for Area Managers at all, they may as well come with a siren in their wake and a light flashing on their head! Their aim is to judge the stores standards independently on their own merits at a random time. Not to visit a store with prior knowledge of their Area Manager coming to visit them!!!

So with this knowledge the Store Manager rush around annoying all the people telling them to do this...and do that they call in extra staff to do more of the work....and what does the member of staff do??? Instead of working at his normal pace and level of skill...he rushes round like a fool to hide all the mistakes the store is making....thus you are helping the stupid manager conceal their own incompetence, for if the store was running and manned as is what supposed to be none of the messing about would be required. He asks you to perform all these unusual tasks and when you ask him why he says...it has to look like this way...for so and so...it should always look this way!!! You try tidying and working to those standards when an Area Manager is not visiting!! You will be told to stop wasting bloody time and to get on with your real job (real job is the fastest way you can...with disregards for quality, customer care, and all such other basic principles)

    To be continued.........................
  • Can you get another job like it or better when you get back? if so go.

Yes. You can't have any time off in December or the week before Easter. If you want the time off it's at your managers discression.
