Hi there, I think its any Debenhams card, like the OP found if you buy something reduced by 50% or more in the sale, they will only exchange or give you a credit note. If you pay on a Debenhams card you will be able to get a refund (to your Debs card obviously!)

I agree with the other posters. I work in customer service, and often put out posters with various information on, it is irritating when people clearly don't bother reading them. The information was clearly in front of your eyes and you could easily have read it. You can't expect every store to contact you personally every time they change something, not everyone spoon-feeds their customers like that. You have to take some intiative and read any notices around the shop.

As far as I know, most shops are open out of school hours. Could you not have taken your daughter in the evening or at the weekend to try the clothes on? Or is your local Debenhams only open 9-3 on weekdays? Is there a reason why you had to specifically go during those hours? Could you not find the dresses on Debenhams website?

It is perfectly normal to expect people to try things on in store before they buy. I would have thought it was easier for you to do this as you then don't need to make a return journey bringing back the unwanted clothes - you just make the 1 journey, try on and buy and that's it. The store provides changing facilities for this purpose. I thought it was also quite normal not to be able to return sale items. Don't see the problem really.

The original post dates back to 2005 and Iimagine the poster has long gone, I think most of the recent posts have been answering a new question posted today. A tad ironic really since you put in your post 'I work in customer service, and often put out posters with various information on, it is irritating when people clearly don't bother reading them. Sorry, this is not a reply as such, but am newbie to forum and could not
find out how to start a new thread so here is my problem -

bought a few elvi clothes last month in debenhams - paid on gold card as they always refund in full - so thought it was safe even though i knew elvi was closing at end June. Took back 2 of the items last week - elvi department had gone - overnight apparently. is there anything i can do to get my money back (£135) or do i just put it down to experience.

hope someone can out there can help

I suspect the Elvi 'store' in Debenhams was a franchise sort of thing which was managed by Elvi staff and not Debenhams? Looking at the Elvi website they appear to be another casualty of the recession.

I am interested though in what your receipt says, is it a Debenhams receipt or an Elvi receipt? If it is a Debenhams receipt I wonder if you might have a good argument that your contract exists with Debenhams and not with their 'store in store'.

OK sorry. I can only say in my defence that the date is quite small and not in big red letters. I don't think I am the first to be confused by someone adding onto an earlier thread.

I have just been reading this and it wasn't till I got to the bottom I realised the original question was from 2005!

hi just to let you know that it was a debenhams receipt for elvi goods paid for with gold card - the problem with debenhams staff seems to be that now there is no elvi department they cannot resell the goods

Yes the information was in front of my eyes, as I've already said, but as the policy had been changed so radically, I would have expected it to have be pointed out by an assistant.

I don't think there's any need for sarcasm - I have no idea whether the outfits were on the website, I don't shop online.

Why is it quite normal not to be able to return sale items? i know there is no legal redress unless item is faulty or mis-sold but most shops are generous in allowing returns and that was my point entirely - Debenhams until very recently before I bought those items (2005), allowed refunds on sale items.
You asked in the previous paragraph whether the goods were available on the website and in this one say it would be easier for me to make 1 journey, try on and buy. But if I had bought 3 outfits online, I'd have to return the others. If I had only bought 1 online & it was no use, I'd still have to return that , so it's not necessarily going to make my shopping any easier.
When I was last in - around Easter time - the policy was that if paid by Debenhams Gold card, they refund in full irrespective of the discount, on that card only and I think they will now accept a returned item that has been reduced by 50% or more, but refund onto a credit voucher to use in store. But reading of the problems that theresa17 has had with the Elvi goods makes me wonder.

theresa17 - could you try another Debenhams or have all Elvi concessions disappeared?

Absolute genius, and I'm sure you complain about the customers who don't read posters :rotfl:

Sorry, ironic post given what you're complaining about!
