  • We have a Deerhound and did a lot of research on getting Pet Insurance for her after reading the threads about it on MSE and seeing that she was classed as a specialist breed. In the end we went for HSBC at £21.56 per month.

(after all we dont have life or health insurance ourselves)

Hubby wasn't thinking straight. The NHS is health insurance :) . We don't even have to pay for GP consults as they do in some other national health scheme (i.e. New Zealand).

As to no-claims, I've yet to see a company offer that. Of course, as they can charge what they like at renewal, I suspect that people who claim will end up paying more than if they hadn't claimed (although nothing like enough to make them lose out).

Is dealing direct a real issue for you? All of our claims (with Halifax) have been settled within ~2 weeks (say 3 weeks to allow for getting the cheque to the bank etc.). If money is tight, you can pay by credit card and the claim cheque will be in your bank account before the credit card falls due.

A non-exclusive list of companies to try is NFU, AXA, Halifax, HSBC, Pet Protect. And PetPlan - you never know, they have been cheaper for one person! I know that Halifax do discounts for multiple pets and would expect most of the others listed here to.
  • I'd recommend PetPlan - not the cheapest but unlike a lot of others they will cover any conditions which develop for life, not just a year.

Just for clarity, all of those I mentioned are, like PetPlan, lifetime policies with renewing limits.
  • Hi

I no longer have credit cards as dealing with my debts so responsibly chopped them up months ago.

I will look into all the companies that you, and others, have suggested.

Appologies for the mistake reguarding the NHS and also the no claims part of discussion!

    Thanks everyone!

Good on you! We're still using credit cards because we haven't had a debt problem, but they do make budgeting effectively impossible (for us anyway :) ).

Thinking about it, if a vet is happy to take direct payments from an E&L-underwritten insurer, then they should be happy to take payments from an AXA-underwritten insurer. As I know that Halifax will pay direct, I'd be surprised if all of the lifetime insurers didn't offer it.
