We went with Petplan, £25/month for 1 year old JRT X. They were the ones the vet (surrepticiously) recccomended.
RE EandL, don't know about pets, but they are useless at wedding insurance.

If that's Gold or Silver, you're only covered for the first 12 months = v. bad news. The Platinum one is lifetime but limited to £7k per condition.

On the plus side it is underwitten by AXA and administered by BDML, which is the same setup as Halifax have and I've had no trouble claiming.

You may find one of the cheaper proper lifetime policies (i.e. AXA) comes in at ~£13 p.m.

Thats the platinum cover i have :D
  • I think that there is a link to a good pet insurance company on Cats-Tell.com. You might want to check that one out.

http://www.eandl.co.uk always seem to be the cheapest when I've looked (for a cat).

avoid E&L like the plague. We are still insured with them - they took 6 weeks to pay out on our dog's dental treatment - and that was after numerous phone calls. Also, I had to pay for the treatment at the clinic because they wouldn't accept E&L would pay up in good time - if we'd have had Petplan they'd have rung through, got approval and I'd not have had to pay it.

We've got to get him re x-rayed in 6 months so his treatment isn't 'finished' but once it is.................

We've got our rescue choc lab insured with PetPals (PetProtect underwritten by Domestic & General). Within 6 months of getting him he had to have an op that cost just over £1,000! I'd already claimed a month or so earlier for treatment for the same condition (anal gland problem!) which they'd paid out for (with a £50 excess) but they paid out again and as vet put on the form that it was a continuation of the previous problem I didn't have to pay the excess again! They also paid out very quickly and second time around my vet was paid directly so I didn't have to fork out the £1,000 (which I couldn't have done anyway!). So I'm very impressed with them. Just waiting to see if the claim will affect the renewal premium in August. May be eating my words if it does! But I would definitely recommend them.

PetProtect are the ones that I always forget about as their product summary pages always say "Lifelong protection up to £6,000". Normally that means there's a £6k limit on claims over the course of the animal's life and the company is doing everything it can to stress the "lifetime" and gloss over the "limit".

Not in this case though. They've just chosen poor wording as they really do cover £6k per year over the life of the pet. Obviously didn't proof read their website :) .

Hi Bromley86 - have to say it all gets very confusing doesn't it! I know I went through the policy with a fine tooth comb so hope I didn't miss anything vital! I thought I'd give them a try (think I clicked on a link on Petsupermarket but it was last year so could be wrong!) and have to say they have been very good when I've claimed. I pay £19/month for their 'gold' policy. Having had rubbish insurance on my previous dog which virtually covered nothing the older he got (and he lived until 16!) and which I gave up on when he reached about 12, I thought I'd look into it better this time round. Hopefully they won't let me down when it comes up for renewal!!

BEST (value/comprehensive) insurance for approx 8 yr old Tomcat (moggie)?

I live in Zone 2 (S E London). However I also live in a flat (1st floor) so he is mostly a housecat (except for ocasional overnight jaunts where he hunts & generally paruses the neighbourhood). I have another cat (female) who is approx 8 but never leaves the building. So I am only contemplating insurance for him. Years ago I took the decision to give them both premium dry food & they have their annual jabs & I put Logic on their teeth regularly (not daily as sometimes I am busy/they run & play hide & seek!). To date they have never boarded in a cattery (I get either friends to come & stay or they board @ my parents when I'm on holiday).

I say approx ages as I don't believe in pet birthdays & both cats came from the internet (Tom had 2 homes before coming to me).

I too have the Platinum Argos/Homebase insurance for my 2 yr old crossbreed. We pay about £13.00 a month with a £60 excess. Have never claimed on pet insurance, but my dog had to have some grass pods removed from his ear the other week. This is covered under the insurance so will be claiming that one :D

    Hi

I have recently been caught up in the AFI & E&L argument via their customers. I am looking at trying to go elsewhere as I dont agree and am getting fed up with the weekly letters bickering between them via me and their other customers.

Not only that but I have 2 'big' dogs (Lurcher X and Greyhound X) insured with them. As the Greyhound X only joined our family last year they wouldnt offer me a 2nd pet discount and I had to take out a new policy for each dog. This means I am now paying £31 for the 2 dogs (2 separate policies for £15.50p each)!

The reason I originally chose AFI was for the reason that the cover for life meant life (or so I was under the influence of) no limits or renewal timescales per condition. As I am having to deal with my debts lately I am looking at switching to another insurance company (My husband comments as to whether to bother with insurance for the dogs as we are on such a tight budget at the moment (after all we dont have life or health insurance ourselves) so maybe a waste of money and un-ethical, after all I question myself would I let the dog suffer if it meant paying out thousands of £ to mend an injury or condition? Now I see it differently).

Its such a minefield to find a good company that will deal direct with oiur vets and give 100% peace of mind cover with a discount for 2 dogs.

Is there a company that gives a no claims discount after so many years?

    Many thanks

    Hope your pets stay well.
