John lewis do some really good ones that have a terry type fabric on top, and have a gortex type breathable backing. Obviously being John lewis they are more expensive, but they aren't sweaty at all.

When my oldest daughter was potty training we got a mat that went under the top sheet. It isn't the full size of the mattress, but is roughly 3' x 3', and covers enough of the mattress to do the job. It is actually designed to absorb the urine, and keep it away from the body. I'm pretty sure we bought it from Mothercare.
  • A bit late to reply but I'll stick my twopenneth in anyway. These do mattress protectors starting from about £9.50 also cot size ones, also the pads like the ones Tim mentioned, not as cheap as ebay but mine has lasted ages, worth a look anyway http://www.snugnights.co.uk
