Weekend trip to Dublin

Hello all

Can anyone help me please? I'm arranging a surprise weekend in Dublin for my husband's 40th birthday. I've managed to borrow a friends apartment for the weekend for nothing (thank goodness) and the flights are booked. His parents are buying a Dublin pass for us both for the major attractions. Does anyone know of any good places to go (relatively cheaply) or any money off vouchers for food etc?

I'm completely green as I've never been to Dublin before but hubby as always wanted to do so I want to make it a weekend to remember!

Seriously, any help would be most gratefully received!!!

Thanks!

Sharon

if you get a day or 3day pass for the tour bus, it includes various discounts on attractions, restaurants etc.

also if you visit the guiness factory don't join the ticket Q. it is infact free to visit and walk all around...but everyone joins the Q and pays and gets the 'free' pint at the top with their ticket...when really you are cheaper (free!) just walking in and buying your own pint at the top if you want one. and this is allowed, its not sneaking in or anything!

The tourist office is on Suffolk Street, and they have a wall of flyers for restaurants, most of which have money off or free drinks or something.

If you want to look at the Book of Kells, attempt to find a student and offer them €5 to walk in with you and show their ID to the desk. It's free for them to go look at the exhibition and to take up to four guests.

What sort of things are you looking to go and see? I live in Dublin so if you have anything specific in mind drop me a PM...

The Museum of Natural History is closed at the moment, and for the foreseeable future, because its staircase collapsed. So you won't be able to go there.

Sorry I don't have many money saving tips for you but I just wanted to say take a lot of money with you!! Dublin's pretty expensive for eating (well, compared to where I live anyhow). We were only there for a couple of nights so just went to Temple Bar on both occassions as it was quite busy and lot's happening. A colleague at work advised me to stick to the old style pubs for cheaper food and larger portions. Maybe someone else could advise you best on those.

Oh and you must go to the zoo! It's fantastic! The best zoo I've ever been in. If you have one of the bus passes for jumping on and off it stops at Phoenix Park where you can get off and go to the zoo. I think it was EUR14 each but can't quite remember. Enjoy!! :)

Bewlay's Coffe shop on Grafton is well worth a visit; Meeting place of the Irish litertati for generataions (Wilde, Shaw, Joyce, etc) is is an extarordinary building and fun just to be in for coffee and cakes, a suprisingly cheap dinner (not he world's most sophisticated but absolutley fine), and the Irish breakfast for 10 Euros will certainly guarantee that you don't need lunch!!
Just because somebody is certain doesn't mean they are right!
  • I found that the touristy partrs, ie Temple Bar are more expensive for drinks and food, Expect to pay around 5 euro for a pint and anything upto 10euro for a spirit and mixer. Theres a great russian themed bar by the river, cant remember the name off the top of my head. They do lots of flavours of vodka, have a large dance floor and its no door cover charge. Avoid Club M at all costs, its hen and stag city and theres usually fighting/drunken crying women, etc... Lillies is a good spot, its at the bottom of Grafton Street.

Check out the Diesel shop too, just round the corner from Lillies if you like their clothing. Its MUCH cheaper than the UK.

Having got the Airmiles Duo card as per Martins Email I now have two free return flights with Dublin as a possible destination. However it looks like I will have to fly from Heathrow which is a shame as I live nearer instead!

Friends at work have recommended the Jail and the Guinness factory too. The Jail is £3 an adult, and £4 for the Guiness factory.
  • If you can afford it, have dinner at Shanahan's at the Green. It's an amazing steak restaurant and one of the best places I've ever eaten.

Steak started at about 45 euros

Sorry, not MSE really but nice food

Temple bar is nice to walk down but highly over-rated and over-priced for drinks/eats..

dont rate the guinness storehouse, could have been far more interesting IMO, nice view from the sky bar (on a good day) - wish I'd have known you could get in for free... was ushered into the queue, worked out a ver dear glass of orange ;)

do visit kilmainham gaol, very interesting.. its on the bus tour route
