free parking could cost dearly

Options
Traveling round I have noticed a practice which appears to be on the increase.
When parking As you go to the machine to pay sometimes only about £2,
Some kind person offers you a ticket with say one hour left on it, as they are now going.
Some even leave there old ticket by the box for you to take.
You see Lots of people taking them unaware
They then put the ticket in their car and walk of pleased.

However most of these tickets are NON-TRANSFERABLE and it is printed on it or displayed on the notice board, The fine can be £20 or more.

I Am Not Saying You Will Be Fined ,And You Proberly Will Not But The Choice Is Yours

As most parking is now enforced by hand held computers the attendent sometimes logs the vehicle reg and time, and the tickets are also numbered, if they wanted to, they could easily establish you did not purchase that ticket.
Therefore your £2 saving could become a £20 fine or more

Some tickets like in edmonton have TRANSFERABLE on them so it is ok but these are rare.

Technically they are non-transferable. However, the reason that the time is printed in large font type is because it's otherwise difficult to read the details. I cannot imagine many ticket inspectors leaning close to every window to check the validity of a ticket and input each ticket number to make sure it hasnt been used. It is a fairly common practise in the UK as a whole - it would be interesting to hear how many times people have been caught using this practise. Like you say the fine could be ten times or more the ticket price. If so then if the fines amount to more than the cost of buying a ticket the x number of times it will be on average until you get caught, then buy a ticket - otherwise you are better to accept people's generosity and use any that are left.

  • Thanks piggeh.
    See your point

If you reguarly use them you can sort of build up credit!
Personally I would rather not take the gamble.

Just thought I would point it out, To give people the choice.

I have heard that some naughty people park without buying a ticket and if they get a penalty notice they wait till someone legally parked nearby is leaving, then ask for their ticket. They then claim that they had a ticket but - "it must have fallen off the windscreen - look, here it is !"
Not that I would ever advocate such an underhand tactic of course !!! ;)

ha, that doesn't work for me. Our ticket inspectors say if they don't see it then tough, you're fined. I had a permit which had slid off my dash and got a ticket for non-displayal. (it could still be seen - it just wasn't in the windscreen) even though I sent them proof that I had puchased an annual permit, with my car reg on it and a photocopy of the permit they still fined me  b@stards!
