I went into our local store to enquire and got told I needed to show them my city and guilds cert. I haven't got one of those I replied. Well you can't work in the trade then, I work for **** ***** I replied (insert word, build 4x4's). Well you need to show us your city and guilds. Like I said I don't have one, what other qualifications will you accept? Know, as you can't have any. Excuss me, I've got a few qualifications I thought, however it was obvious that I wasn't going to get anywhere so left..
Might try another store, wondering whether I need to take my degree and chartered engineers cert to show them I do have quals.. Oh hum, looks like I'll be spending more money at GSF then.
It must be said it does seem to be very hit and miss, and I've spoken to a few guys here and they just showed their works passes and where given the trade card..

I got one on the strength of an old C&G in Advanced HGV Examination & Testing from the wheeltapping and dinging hammer days. Hummed and ha'd a bit about not catering for HGV's but relented when I pointed that you did need tools for them, often big expensive ones.0 -
upol grey stripe seam sealer rrp £14.99 trade £13.49
unsure how to add to the long psot as it says its too many works now0 -

And as for the Trade card....
1st class for the Tools as they're decent stuff. But for Parts Oils Fluids etc forget it... I find They're sky high to start with and after Trade card they're still usually a bit higher then ECPS or other local suppliers before Trade.0 -
Cool thanks for the heads up, I guess I will just try it out..
The things I need to look at getting are:
New Disks + Pads
Glow Plugs
Horn
Rear Wiper Blade
Maybe some bulbs
Oil + Filter
I get the idea I would get something off all this, but would it be better off getting any of this stuff from elsewhere? It seems worth trying out I guess.0 -

Halfords is great for bulbs with trade card. Oil prices are reasonable but not earth shattering.
I've just noticed Halfords have a 10% off car accessories reserved online deal which applies to horns. I would recommend one of these horns http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/STEBEL-NAUTILUS-COMPACT-Air-Horn-motorbike-car-van-12v_W0QQitemZ250640209423QQcmdZViewItem?rvr_id=141151203696&rvr_id=141151203696&cguid=89a6536f1250a0aad0e4a474fc6f72ae but depending on the car they usually require some car electrical wiring expertise and also extra wire, connectors, fuse holder, and wiring in with the supplied relay.0 -
Try ... for disks, pads, glow plugs, rear wiper blade, and oil filter. Their prices for those types of bits I have gotten in the past seem to be around the trade card price or less, plus they're delivered free from the website.

Ok cool that is great, I will take a look at those now.
I have a Peugeot 106 1.5D. The horn shouldn't be too much trouble I would guess as it it connected via the usual connectors. So for the majority of parts you reckon it would not be worth trying Halfords at all even with the card?0 -
Apart from the horn and the oil, I've actually bought all the parts for the same car from Halfords on a trade card, you may beat them by shopping around, but not by enough, and I'm not in to receive the parcel anyway.0
