I tried handbrake but it said I needed to convert dvd files first. Any help appreciated
The Windows version of HandBrake doesn't decrypt DVDs. You need to copy the DVD onto your computer using a program such as DVD Decrypter, and then convert that using HandBrake.0 -

You dont need to copy to your hard drive if you use dvd4free. When you insert your dvd into your drive it gets decrypted straight away, then use handbrake to convert0 -
I use a Mac, and the Mac version of HandBrake can decrypt DVDs. I still copy them onto my computer first though, as I'd rather not have my DVD drive spinning for hours.0
