"Sold as seen" and "untested" item was faulty - does this warrant a neg?

I bought a camera flash the other day which was sold as "[working] the last [time] it was used but I have to sell it as seen as I have no way to check if it works." It arrived yesterday and although it's in fantastic condition it doesn't work at all (won't charge).

I suspect the seller was aware of the fault as testing would have involved putting in 2 AA batteries and pressing the Test button but it wasn't that expensive and I bought it knowing it was sold as seen so I'm not going to bother trying to return it... but I'm not sure what kind of feedback I should leave. Is this worthy of a neg or is a neutral bad enough?

  • Sorry Steveeeee, but if you purchased it with a risk that it wouldn't work, then you have lost out this time.
I'm assuming it was purchased on an auction site, if so, try sending the seller an email alerting him to the fact that the flash is faulty.
At least he will have the chance to do something about it before you leave feedback, if he refuses to help and you suspect foul play, then leave the appropriate feedback. If he refunds you, then leave positive feedback.

I'd say with a summary like that on the listing, bidding was a rash choice.

Feedback isn't really the issue here - I'd say the writing was on the wall. If you want to request a refund, you could try that... then follow up with a SNAD dispute if necessary, but you might be on shaky ground considering the wording on the listing.

Sorry, I should clarify: this was on eBay. And I'm not after a refund as I've accepted the loss, but I'm wondering whether I should leave negative or neutral feedback, or having bought it sold as seen I should leave positive feedback.
  • sold as seen / not tested = not working

i dont think you could justify a neg

Update: forget the whole thing. I just took the flash apart (I'm a natural meddler) and I've managed to get it to charge and fire. There's a loose connection in there somewhere, just needs locating and fixing properly.:j

I know this is now resolved, but just FYI, here's a thread from someone who got an item they weren't satisfied with, didn't care to discuss it with the seller, and left poor feedback.

As your first post hinted that you were going to leave a neg or a neutral, I didn't imagine you were intending to leave a pos!

99 times out of a 100 sold as seen/untested means it does not work.

Entirely up to you whether to leave any feedback.

I never go near such auctions, if it is an easy item to test and they have not bothered to, it makes you wonder why they did not test it and if it worked sell it for a lot more chances are they did test it and it did not work.

I've actually sold a non working item as not tested and received a positive back.

I'd be tempted to leave positive saying "great item ,works perfectly"
That will confuse the seller(who without a doubt knew it didn't work) like h*ll and he will realise he might have got more for it:rotfl:

im sorry but what is the problem here?
the item was described as sold as seen and not tested.
bidding should be based on that fact.
normal auctions at venues are conducted like this all the time.
you bid, you win, you accept the terms.

when you got the item it was in great cosmetic condition. the fact that it didnt work is neither here nor there.
also you now state a wire had come loose. did it come loose in transit?
    who knows?
    Get some gorm.
