I think stoneman has proved my point.

Security checking of IDs would be pretty ineffective when the people doing the checking have very little idea from day to day who is actually responsible for control, or how their checks actually achieve it.

And alanrowell, I thought that many especially 'new EU' citizens were far from immune from people trafficking. The fact that you are theoretically free to travel doesn't make you free from abuse, especially if you are a child, or have been tricked into becoming a sex slave with no passport.

On the question of rationalising the Boeings on the Ryanair fleet, bagand96, I am not surprised to hear that they are getting rid of their earlier 738s. 5 years is a long time to be on the receiving end of the punishment that Ryanair dishes out daily. I certainly wouldn't want to fly in their cast offs, or indeed in any they have already ear-marked for cast-off either! They push the envelope in so many new ways that if the aiframes were allowed to age any further on their regime, I am sure we'd start seeing them fail in new ways too!

What's this book I am supposed to be writing, Sam Bee?

I'm not sure whether you are being serious or not, but if you are it shows you know very little about the airline and aircraft industry other than what you have witnessed as a passenger, and then made up the rest to qualify statements like that.

I know enough to be dangerous bagand96, so if your business is safety first in an airline environment near me, then just know that I am watching.

If you know enough to be dangerous, concerning Ryanair's or anyone elses operation, then take it to the Civil Aviation Authority and the Irish Aviation Authority, they'll be more than willing to hear from you. Although of course, being someone that does have such concerns (with evidence of course), I am sure you have already done this.

My business, well yes it is in the aviation industry (its not Ryanair btw). I have enough people watching and regulating me day in day out, another one won't matter. I'll continue to do my job to the highest standards, and within regulations, as I always have done ;)

So you lied - well you were lucky especially with Spain's requirement for Advanced Passenger Data

To qualify for Online Check-in each passenger must present either a valid passport or National Identity Card, issued by the government of an EU/ European Economic Area (EEA) country which matches the document details printed on their online boarding pass, at both airport security and the departure gate.

Yes I lied. I have been to Spain enough to know that there has never been anyone that has checked this utter tosh that they have brought out about wanting advance passenger info. God, there is never any one on passport control at Gerona
The reason I tried it last time is because Ryanair were going to screw us both for airport check-in as my wife was not allowed to do it if I didn't because she was in "my party" (She is British)
The common law of business balance prohibits paying a little and getting a lot. If you deal with the lowest bidder, it is well to add something for the risk you run, and if you do that you will have enough to pay for something better.

Ryanair arent "screwing" anyone with airport check in.Being a EU citizen has certain priveleges in the EU as no doubt you being a US citizen does in the USA
The fact there is a charge, doesnt justify breaking the law.
You could have avoided the charge for your wife by doing a seperate booking, allowing her to check in online,
I imagine, if you had been refused boarding in the UK, or arrested at the other end, you would be outraged and feel hard done to.
To put it another way Stoneman, just because the woman behind the counter in the sweetie shop isnt watching, its not ok to stuff your pockets with sweets

Ryanair passengers DON'T have to pay to check in at the airport if the sole reason they can't check in on-line is due to not having an EU passport! So it's hardly a 'privilege' for EU citizens!

Just make sure you call their premium-rate customer services number from work to get that £2 refund put back on your card, eh?! :-)

    From Ryanair web-site:

"The following passengers do not qualify for Online Check-In:
    • Passengers travelling with checked baggage
    • Children aged between 14-18 years travelling alone
    • Passengers travelling with infants
    • Passengers travelling with mobility equipment (including children's pushchairs)
    • Passengers with reduced mobility, blind/vision impaired passengers including those travelling with a sighted companion (*)
    • Blind/vision impaired passenger travelling with a guide dog (*)
    • Passengers who require special assistance at the airport (*)
    • Passengers travelling from Italy to the United Kingdom
    • Passengers travelling on a passport which is due to expire within 30 days from the date of travel
    • When there are more than 9 passengers booked in a reservation
    • Passengers travelling on the same reservation with a passenger who is not entitled to Online Check-in
Where a passenger is unable to avail of Online Check-in by reason only of a matter marked(*) above any Airport Check-In fee paid will be refunded at the time the special services are requested. Where a passenger is unable to avail of Online Check-in by reason only of not being the holder of either a valid passport or a National Identity Card, issued by the government of an EU/EEA country, any Airport Check-In fee paid will be refunded upon application."

Bagand96, very glad to hear you are an ingrained high standards type. The world in 2008 needs as many as it can get.

Interested in your comment about you having enough people (regulators) already watching you operate such that you won't notice one more ... I was unaware that there were 'wall-to-wall' inspectors in any section of the industry, it being largely self-regulated based on published rules which essentially comprise Air law. Have I overlooked an area which is actually closely monitored by people 'on the ground' other than via the paperwork?

Don't worry mate, I wouldn't have cried about it, I would have talked my way out, I always do. I am just one of those guys that tries it on, sometimes it works, sometimes not, never regret your actions if you get caught, thats how the game goes. (and I ALWAYS fill my pockets when she isn't looking)
    Nikko,
thanks for that advice, I assumed that because they said that she was unable to check-in online that she would have to pay. (Oh Christ, now I am going to get flamed for not reading the T&C)
