Hmmmm might have to look into it! Also things like donughts and cakes??? Just talked to OH and at the moment at least, he will support me with not buying egg products - not entirely sure he gets quite how much we will be giving up! Oh well at least he will be getting Marks/Waitrose pizzas/sliced meat etc.

I think I had better getting talking very nicely to the OS lot for advice!

make your own cakes etc with eggs from a local provider hon, provided you know that the egg in them is fine you'll enjoy eating it all the more. xx

i have a parrot and its the same as 6 chickens being in the bottom of his cage!!! i cant afford to buy free range chickens like i DID the battery ones, i will not be buying them anymore, its now going to be a treat. Im also looking into getting some chickens of my own, ive spent the last few days in tears watching the progs, sensitive i know, my eldest has also watched the prog and he felt the same altho the oh doesnt. Its a very difficult subject, what got me is on the hugh fernley progs a lot of the people were saying they couldnt afford to pay the extra pound or so whilst they were drinking beer in the pub!! Surely if they bought the beer and drank it at home theyd save more than a pound to pay for the free range. i do understand its apersonal choice and im not getting at anyone, my own personal choice is no more, free range only, even tho it will mean less chicken dishes. I am a big animal lover so its a natural choice for me, i am nicknamed doolittle lol,my mini zoo is growing by the day lol. xxx

I make my own cakes normally, its just things like mayo, coleslaw and god knows what else!
Bean burgers I bet have a crispy bread crumb coating and Birdeseye veggie fingers, Quorn, bread???? Biscuits?? I am sorry its just you dont always think about these things. It took me ages to work out all the ok veggie foods and now it wil be harder working out the eggs and possibly milk as non organic milk is pretty unethical.

i also used the point that if it was cats or dogs being kept in those conditions there would be outcry, alth it was pointed out by oh that we in this country dont eat them, not in this house anyway ;). He is a bodybuilder and goes thru 15 eggs a day, they were caged hens eggs. Luckily for me i do the shopping and i think that the extra money is worth it. I am going to feel much better not buying them anymore, hence im going to get my own chickens, luckily i have th egarden space to do that. I know its going to work out quite a few pounds more expensive but my conscience will feelmuch better and i will go without little luxurys for that reason. as i said its a very difficult situation but for me a pound a time will be wrth it, and dont forget that hugh showed us how to get an extra dinner out of the chicken, iw ill be trying his rissotto over the weekend, ive never made one before so wish me luck x i cried a lot and i wantt o do my bit for me, no digs at anyone meant, i do understand peoples reasons not too x

Does anyone have any links to free range producers? ...

You could try the search on Hugh's River Cottage site-

    HIya Star-X.

The situation with milk is thus.

The cow is put in calf to produce milk.
As soon as the calf is born, it is 9 times out of ten killed and the cow put back into calf at her first season.
The milk extractors (for want of a better term) simulates the calf suckling and as such keeps the cow producing milk.
The calf is a bi product of the industry and if not suitable for meat/ veal production abroad/breeding are shot by the farmer.
The programme i saw showed an industrial skip brim full of day old calf carcasses. the trauma that this must cause the cow is unimaginable. yes i still have milk but am considering alternatives.
