I'm not either, but it's a cost choice. Barn birds get a bit more space, but EU regulations state that they only need to have 30 mins darkness within every 24 hrs.

If god didn't want us to eat animals, he shouldn't have made them out of meat.
As for meat in supermarkets, if it's cheap it's probably badly produced, which is the same concept for most things."I have enough money to last me the rest of my life, unless I buy something."0 -
What the programme didn't make clear id that the birds Hugh produced were barn birds not caged birds, I not suggesting he should have willingly set up a caged barn for birds (god forbid!) but I am assuming that there are three types of production for meat birds as there are with eggs, free range, barn and caged. Personally I don't eat meat but I do buy free range eggs, I am on a tight budget and if it came down to barn/caged eggs or no eggs then no eggs it would be. If I buy meat for guests then it will be free range or vegetarian, like it or lump it. I'm of fthe opinion that if you can't afford to eat free range then cut down on how often you eat it. There is a fourth option as well which is organic birds/eggs, the way they live their short life is even better than free range, for example eg laying hens get more room if they are organic than if they are merely free range."You've been reading SOS when it's just your clock reading 5:05 "0

I find it interesting that so many people on here eat free range. I'm wondering if its a bit like all those guardian and observer readers. :rolleyes: To throw my two penneth in, I saw a frightening programme years ago about the poor state that egg laying hens were kept in. Since then, I have always insisted on organic eggs from chicken fed on a vegetarian diet. Strangely though. I continued to eat bog standard chicken. I rarely buy meat, but have often had fast food. I am almost certain that this meat will not have been from ethically raised animals.
Its not as simple as only buying free range chicken and eggs though. How many of us eat chocolate (e.g. mars bars have battery eggs in them) or buy ready made cakes/ pies etc. Unless you are prepared to cut all of that stuff out and make everything from scratch, it is very difficult to avoid eating food from intensively farmed animals.BCSC Member 70:j

She really wound me up!!! Takes a LOT of eating (therefore a lot of £££) to get to that size! But the telly editing on her was great.....got the message accross even more effectively.
I felt for the guy who named the chicken, then killed it......"chuffy" is now in their freezer for Xmas!0 -
these high profile peoiple should spend more time campaigning for better healthcare/education etc for now instead of how we kill animals!!! Especially when they both have vested financial interests!!!!!!!!!!
The issue wasn't how the animals were killed, it was how they are raised.
Secondly HFW said he didn't care where people bought their chickens, his shop, Tescos, wherever so long as they were free range.{Signature removed by Forum Team}0 -

HAHA! Jamie Oliver isn't a hooray henry!!! He is an essex boy and went to comprehensive school. He is just in a position where he is able to highlight these issues and is intelligent enough to understand what the best methods of doing so are - hence his dramatic approach to educating his audience. It worked with turkey twizzlers didn't it....?!
Personally I am glad this has been highlighted. I had no idea that conditions were so bad (although I did know my £2.50 chicken tasted of water...). We will be changing our habits, and as suggested 'switching up' to a £3.50 chicken. There is no need to buy organic or free range, just buy a chicken which has been kept in slightly better conditions.
More and more people are interested in the origins of their food, just take a look at OS board on any given day. Jamie et al might be setting the agenda here, but without a willing audience, they wouldn't achieve anything.0
