Custom built PC?

  • They even had the audacity to claim they replaced the faulty motherboard as a gesture of goodwill but didn't have to (even though it was covered by ASUS 3year warranty)
I spoke to my local trading standards office and small claims court has been mentioned. I doubt I'll go down that route since it won't be worth the hassle or cost just for a motherboard.
Their manager Paul Crookes stated that they had fulfilled all their obligations and requirements of the Sale of Goods Act. I almost emailed him to suggest he read it before making such claims!!

**Well he's right, unless you bought an extended warranty. 12 months is all they have to offer legally. Asus 3 year warranty is with the end user(you), not to mention the fact that it takes a good month to get goods back from Asus if they are returned and even then your lucky to get back a replacement that works!

Incorrect. There's no set period of 12 months in the Sale of Goods act. Any "guarantees" are in addition to ,not in stead of, the law.

There is no legal minimum whereby they must repair or replace goods. The Sale of Goods Act states a "reasonable length of time". In other words you wouldn't expect a £2 item to last for years but the same item costing more and of better quality should last.

And ASUS have no warranty with me, nor I with them. I made no purchase and therefore no contract with ASUS. The shop however do have a contract with ASUS since they purchased the board from them.
My contract is with the place i bought the pc from and they must honour any warranty that their parts come with.
For the shop to claim i now have a contract with ASUS and none with them is exactly the kind of thing that leads me to believe they've never actually read or even seen the Sale of Goods Act.

I have checked with Trading Standards and know the above is correct.

I have also emailed PCSpecialist to inform them of their errors and that i would not be purchasing from them again nor would i be recommending them

Hi Beesman, I registered to tell you that Eclipse computers gave me the worst customer service I have ever received. They took something like 3x the advertised time it would take to build and deliver the thing. I emailled them several times, only to be redirected to the next email address.

I've also had issues with their customer service in the past (I'm still waiting for a system fan and nero cd which formed part of one of their DIY kits. The rest of the system was delivered over three weeks ago. Apparently they are out of stock).
On the same system I also had a miss understanding with with them regarding the motherboard (partly my own fault as I didn't read the top level description of the system, and partly their fault because of the information given on the website which I believe is unclear)
However, when I contacted their customer service email address I received an email back saying that there was definitely nothing wrong with their motherboard write up and that I should contact their customer service department to arrange upgrading the motherboard. Strangely this is the email address I used. I have now given up trying to sort this.

I have since been advised by a friend that their customer service is very poor when dealing with them via email, but very good when contacted via phone or in person (Based in Coventry).

darich I think you're getting CRT (cathode ray tube, or the big deep glass thing) mixed up with a TV (television). TVs have the type of resolution you're talking about, but CRT monitors have long had HIGHER resolutions than LCD monitors. And a bigger colour range (are you sure you work with photos?). And better contrast. An LCD has a fixed resolution (though some people call it optimum) as they have physical pixels. I'm using a rubbish, slow 15" one right now at 1024x768.
The real reason that LCDs are successful is because they look better, take up less space, and use less electricity than CRTs. Only now are LCDs hitting the same quality as CRTs.
Far enough off topic yet? I'd rather build my own PC. There are stacks of websites (https://www.tomshardware.com) that can get you started on what to put together. You'll not believe how you were gonna pay someone to do it!

    Hi,
Just a thought , but when buyibg a PC , think about using a credit card.
It gives you the extra protection of Section 75 making the credit provider liable for any problems.
