Custom built PC?

Hi all,

My first post - please be gentle! :D

I'd like to order (online) a PC from somewhere I can customise the specifications (motherboard, processor, memory, graphics card, PSU, etc).

Has anyone had good/bad experience of any sites? Can anyone recommend sites?

Any advice appreciated.

    Thanks for your reply Rachael.

I have taken a look at Dell, & their Jan offers aren't too bad, but they don't allow customisation without a monitor & some other core components. However, I've found Eclipse Computers, who seem to have been rated well by others, & they do allow this level of customisation. May give them a whirl!

You could always build your own - it isn't too difficult. Personally I recommend that you should get a branded one. (better warranty and usually cheaper these days!).

What about buying a suitable base unit and choosing the monitor yourself? www.ebuyer.com have some good deals.

    Try www.pcspecialist.co.uk

I got mine there and they could not be more helpful

If you are a handy person build your own pc just get the Haynes manual or similar book and you will be fine its easy. Its the only way you can truly customize your pc and it will be cheaper

Ive used www.iscomputers.com a lot will depend on where you are based as if you can save on delivery you can save £50+

They really are easy to do www.overclockers.co.uk is a good place to get advice on forums and to get hardware from.
  • If you know anyone who works with computers ask them, all geeks know somebody who can build a PC lol. Mine cost around £250 to build (Add on a tenner and some beers for the guy who did it lol) and it's still got fantastic spec 2 years later and is worth around £600..

I'm glad you got a good PC but its wishful thinking if not sheer fantasy to believe that a two year old PC , handbuilt or off the shelf will do anything than depreciate over that time in the real world. Try selling it and see how close to £600 you get.

How can a PC that cost £250 be now worth more than double 2 years later?

    Hi Beesman,

I have just ordered a computer from DELL - without a monitor. I have spent a few weeks looking at different sites as I too was looking to customise the specifications. I compared pcspecialist, mesh and DELL like for like and with the offers dell was offering at the time it worked out cheaper than the rest. I ordered on 9th January and hopefully it will arrive on or before 23rd. I did look at a couple of other sites but they weren't ones I had heard of and not sure they were reputable.

Good luck in finding your computer, personally I would go for a reputable brand.
