I've got a 1.8 Focus TDCi and can't fault the engine in it. Powerful when you need it to be, economical when you don't! And for a diesel, it's amazingly quiet.

Only downside, if that is the right word, is that if you get a problem with the engine, you have to get it looked at by a professional. Modern common rail diesel engines run at such massive injection pressures that they are dangerous to repair yourself if you don't know what you are doing. Having said that, they have a fantastic reliability record and a 12,500 mile service interval is nice too!

Thanx. Do you have to wait for Glow Plug lights to go out before starting the car?

You don't have to ( that's why I said "should"), it just makes starting a cold engine easier.

Is this still true? I mean, I have a Citroen C4, and I don't know where the Glow Plug lights are. I just switch on the car and go. Is this wrong?

    Thanx

When I first got my diesel (Fabia fyi anewman ;)) I was cautious about the whole glow plug tihng. A coil light does come on. However, I've since been advised by quite a few people that in recent engines you should ignore this and just start as normal. I think only older vehicles you need to wait.

I do wait for the glow plugs to go out every time. You will find it much quicker and easier to start if you do.

What leads you to this belief? I have never known a diesel not to have glow plugs.

    I can't either, a 1.6 petrol Fiesta gives 42 mpg and a 1.6 diesel gives 62 mpg !
