Any advice or comments about laying ceramic tiles in an upstairs bathroom would be appreciated.
I did read somewhere not to lay them direct onto the floorboards.

If the floor boards are TandG then you can lay directly on them.

I'd like to think that my tiling would last a bit longer than 12-24 months before the grout cracks and the tiles come loose. There has been a lot of discussion on various internet building and tiling forums about the subject of preparation before tiling and there is a lot of different opinions even amongst so called professionals.(To the extent that some forums don't talk or link to each other despite being in the same profession) I am siding with people who I know to be professional tilers who do high end domestic and commercial work. I also believe that a number of the people who say things like you can tile direct onto the floor, you only need hardboard, 3mm ply etc have either been lucky or it is a "Porpoise" story. That is, because you never hear the other side of the story you assume one side is true. Neither is it likely that a so-called professional is going to post on a forum something like "You know that job I did a few months back where I said I tiled directly on the floor? The customer has just phoned up saying the grout is cracking."
I shall now say PVA just to annoy people.A house isn't a home without a cat.

I hear that 12mm ply is a minimum requirement but better still use aquaboard.0
