Upgrades on O2 Simplicity?

I've been on O2 Simplicity (sim only) for about 8 months now, and I really like my tariff (I get 600 anytime minutes and 1000 texts, plus free texts friday to monday with long weekends for £25 a month), but my phone has had it. It's a Sony Ericsson K750i, which has really suited me, but I've had it over 2 years now and the joystick is dying.

I really need a new phone but I don't want to move to a worse or more expensive tariff. Does anyone know if O2 offer any kind of discount or incentive on new phones to Simplicity customers? Unlikely, I know.

simplicity is is a sim only tariff, to get a new handsey as upgrade you can keep your tariff but it will be £15 more expensive on a 12 mth contract and £10 more expensive on an 18mth contract. simplicity tariffs are so cheap because they don't have to subsidise the cost of a handset

Simplicity - it's a gamble but I'm winning so far (Free with a magic iPhone)

    This might tickle you...

In Nov 07 I was swapping phones and contracts and...

Transferred my number from o2 to an o2 PAYG sim bought in an o2 shop. No problems and after using the £10 credit I was so shocked at the cost so...

Within a week or so I transferred to a simplicity contract (I've a hacked iphone to use so only needed an sim contract with o2). To arrange this I rang o2...

    BUT...

Rather than order a new Simplicity sim card I asked if they could just transfer me over to the Simplicity contract using the PAYG sim I bought in store. They said yes, took details, bank acc. details etc.

That was about 2 months ago. I still haven't had a bill or any paperwork from them!

When I called o2 cust. service they can't figure out what's gone on, and say I don't owe them any thing and have no bill, no call or text usage logged!

Oh yes in case you are wondering, my phone, calls, voice mail, web and texts work fine.

Question is have I a magic iPhone? or just initiated a procedure so complex it has revealed a nice little crack in o2's accounting systems, into which all my mobile costs have vanished? mmm...

Of course it could all end in tears.

Anyone else fancy trying this, it's actually a cheap gamble as you can cancel a Simplicity contract giving 30 days notice. and o2 PAYG sims are cheap too.

    Best of luck!

Sounds more worrying maybe argeetee, i get the feeling they will notice at some point and come looking for you......on that note i'd keep a check on your web usage especially as with simplicity you only get 1 mb free. Then it could start getting pricey

As for the orginal problem i'd suggest phoning them up and seeing what they can offer.
Say that you need a new phone and are thinking of going to another network

I just recently moved off a simplicity sim back to a 18 month contract with £10 discount of the each month of what the contact should cost.

I recently moved from my £25 simplicity tariff to a £40 tariff, which they have discounted by £15 a month - so I am getting 800 minutes and 2000 texts (plus free weekend calls) for £25 a month. Not to mention the free handset (initially a Nokia E65 which I swapped for a N95 with 8GB card - which incidentally is in the process of being swapped for something else to be advised!)

I wonder if someone can help clarify something?
I phoned O2 the other day to enquire about changing to their Simplicity package when my regular contract expires in a couple of months (I wanted to know how to go about doing it and keeping my number). I suspect they transferred me to their Carphone Warehouse department, where I was informed that I am eligible for an upgrade this month. I told the lady that I wish to change to Simplicity and to my surprise she said I can do this on my upgrade date (and still claim my ‘cheque back’). This seems a little odd, that they would let me change to a contract that is half the price and has no commitment. Is there some catch, or was she just plain wrong?
  • Dreado, I think what she meant is you could give your 30 days notice on the same day as your upgrade day (as far as i know you can upgrade 11 months after contract started if you're on a 12 mth contract, so 30 days would be the same as this). To change from a contract to simplicity you need to give 30 days notice, as you are cancelling the contract.

Thanks carolineb23, maybe that’s it. Although I think it will be 2 months until my contract ends...

This is for people on the pay monthly 30 day contract o2 Simplicity tariff.

Has anyone been offered a cheaper deal if you threaten to leave o2 and on the £15 200 mins and 400 texts tariff?
  • Thanks everyone for the advice. Been a bit busy last couple of weeks with exams but I'm gonna get this sorted out now.

Planning on phoning O2 in a bit to see what they can offer, I've seen an offer on Vodafone which will give me a free phone, 500 minutes, and unlimited texts, £25pm. If O2 can't beat or equal that then I will get my PAC and sign up to Voda :)

I was thinking of getting the Samsung G600 but I'm not exactly taken with any of the ones that are out at the moment, they are all kind of bulky looking. I think it's been out for a while now, whenever I buy a new phone a better one always comes out about a week later. Is there any way of finding out what phones are coming up for release in the next couple of weeks, if any?
