Curtains - Dry clean or wash them myself?
Comments
-
Unless they are velvet, I'd wash them. All my curtains say "Dry Clean" and I've washed them all! I hang them up damp after washing and they don't need ironing then.I Believe in saving money!!!:T

I never have with mine. I Just put them on a 40 degree wash with a colour catcher in. Never had any problems with this. I think they say dry clean only just to cover themselves.
N.B. If you do do this it's at your own risk i'm only telling what I do'The More I know about people the Better I like my Dog'

Thank you both. I am going to stick them in and see what happens (and don't worry I won't blame anyone if it goes horribly wrong

I always ignore the labels and wash mine too. Definitely hang them wet to save ironing them too....... Ironed them once and that was enough!! Took forever!Father Ted: Now concentrate this time, Dougal. These
(he points to some plastic cows on the table) are very small; those (pointing at some cows out of the window) are far away...

washed mine and they shrank.still ok though.0

I doubt the curtains will shrink with a fabric content of polyester and cotton if you don't wash them too hot but I'd be worried about the lining and interlining. I suppose everything depends on how expensive they were in the first place.0
-
it depends on whether the actual curtain is cotton and the lining polyester!
I would try a very cool wash, 30 if possible and a short spin. This usually works for me - I have rarely had curtains shrink in the wash but - sometimes the lining distorts a bit. soon cured by steam ironing or using a steamer when you hang them back up!0 -
As meritaten says, I have never had a problem with the curtain, but sometimes the lining ends up twisted and needs ironed back into shape!RIP Iain

I have some expensive curtains in the sitting room which I've never dared to wash.
I hang them on the line on a blowy day and give them a spray of Febreze to freshen them.0 -
In my last house, silly me took pair to the cleaners (darn expensive) and they looked faded as a result. I'm sure I have washed curtains before, on a gentle wash and had better results.
Just my opinion.
