Creating extra gmail addresses
Be gentle - I am trying to get my head round this but do not handle change well!
Scenario - have had BT email for decades, with a main address and what used to be termed a subsidiary address (used to be able to have several). Main is what I call my "personal" email used for family, friends and official & private stuff (banking etc) and the sub address is used for all emails to do with a particular niche interest. I also have a gmail address from when I set up a Google account on my PC. This gets used for general stuff, like registering on websites, shopping etc. Emails to/from the BT addresses arrive on my PC into my gmail account in sub inboxes and also likewise onto my android phone. All works fine.
But now I am thinking that at next renewal I will ditch my EE (was BT) broadband service, which I have only kept because until recently I needed a landline phone. So I would like to replace the 2 BT emails (tied as they are to ISP) with a couple of extra gmail ones leaving me free to ditch and switch broadband in future. But I still want 3 different email addresses. If I can get 2 new gmail ones then I can simply migrate over to them from my BT ones with plenty of time to advise any contacts before moving from EE.
I am confused as to whether I can add extra gmail addresses to my existing Google account or if I need to set up 2 extra Google accounts first - one for each new email. Having read stuff online and watched some videos I am now dithering over which is the best way to go. Guidance from someone who has actually done this would be appreciated as I have no-one around to ask.
I was prompted to think about this as a friend has just been told his Virgin ntl email will be closed & it seems prudent to move away from ISPs as this may well be a future trend.

You can set up new google mail address, but you also have to create a new account.
I have 3 used for various purposes.

If you create new gmail accounts they will automatically be linked to your Google account. In fact you have to go to some lengths to ensure you are not logged in to google if you want to create a new gmail address without it being linked to your existing google account

I appreciate your answers, but they seem to reflect what I read online which caused my confusion.
@born_again says I need new accounts - do you mean you have 3 Google accounts for 3 emails?
@GrubbyGirl_2 seems to indicate I don't need new accounts. But I don't understand how I would create new gmail addresses if I was not logged in to my Google account.

If you go int your existing gmail inbox and click on the symbol with a letter in on the top right, you should see an option to 'add another account'. If you do this you'll get a second account & email address linked to the first and you can move between the two

If you're logged into your google account any new Gmail accounts you create will be linked (part of) your google account

Yes I have 3 separate accounts.

Can you clarify what you mean by different Google accounts being 'linked'?
I've got half a dozen Google accounts and can't see any way that they are linked? Don't know of a Google function that says 'show accounts linked to this one' or 'show me all my Google accounts'?

Linked is probably not the right word. I meant that, having added several new accounts to my existing one, I can now 'toggle' between them all from my initial mailbox.

Sorry to be pedantic here but the detail is important. You haven't "added…new accounts to my existing one", you have created separate, distinct Google accounts?
"Toggle" as in move between different instances of Chrome browser each of which is signed into a different Google account?

You're overthinking this. Each gmail address is its own Google account. Set up a new gmail address, you get a new Google account. Set up a new Google account, you get a new gmail address.
The accounts are not linked together, except for the limited 'link' when you use one as the recovery email to another. All the options in the top right do is allow you to sign in to multiple accounts at the same time, so you can switch between them without having to log in again.5
