Most cost efficient way to keep toilet hygienic?

IMO a toilet doesn't have to be sterile. It has to be clean in the first place - and toilet blocks are waste of money in this respect. They only make water look nicer and smell better.
Every time I take a bath I pour couple of bowls of warm soapy water into my toilet and wash it with a brush. And IMO a good dish brush is much better for this than usual toilet brushes.

Replaced my toilet fairly recently. The manufacturer advised against using those blocks as it could damage the glaze in the long term.
I just give mine an occasional wipe and maybe a squirt of bleach once in a blue moon just to keep the bowl looking reasonably clean.
Any language construct that forces such insanity in this case should be abandoned without regrets. –

We don't put anything in the loo. We just clean it a couple of times a month when we do the bathroom. Toilet brush keeps it reasonably clean in between.
We don't use bleach at all, in the toilet or otherwise. I was told years ago by an old boy at a water company that bleach kills off the bacteria that the water treatment plant needs to help clean up the waste water, so it's not a good thing to do.

Watch out for the toilet seat. I used to have a ribbed plastic toilet seat but it turned out to be particularly poor from a hygiene point of view and impossible to clean because every time you flush, the the moulded grooves and recesses trap urine, faecal contamination, moisture and debris. I replaced it with a smooth, non-porous wooden seat which is much easier to wipe and disinfect, and more comfortable to sit on

I'd heard that silicone toilet brushes resist fecal material and I have found that to be true. My silicone brush has been perfect in this respect. It doesn't get at all manky over time like the usual nylon brushes.

We only use bleach when we go on holiday ,as we leave the house we put some down the bowl and dont flush till we get home unless our son uses the toilet when he checks the house ,do not see the use of pouring bleach down the toilet often just to flush it down the sewer.

They do more than that. If nothing else, they have some sort of detergent that produces foam, and some perfume.
If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.1 -
Only go to the toilet at work

And as expected, I was right. Do I get a prize?
