Have you considered Pipex or Plusnet?

I am with Pipex and they are extremely reliable.

No you can't and I think you need to use a different "screenname" for use on AOL Instant Messenger (AIM).

Suggest you set up and use another portable and free e-mail account - hotmail , gmail - to allow you to switch in future without similar hassle. I was with AOL but didn't use the AOL e-mail much (hotmail instead) so that I didn't feel tied....

Glad I left them BTW. Great service from Blueyonder.

If I cancel my contract with AOL what happens to my blue band modem (which was free from them). Do I get to keep it? Can I use it with another ISP?

  • The charges with Aol are bad enough, conducting email correspondence with them is beyond belief!

Their latest reply to me was an exact copy of an email they had sent out to me. Not only that, by including the previous correspondence within the latest email, they've sent it twice in the same email

It's the one in my 9.34 post that starts off.."Dear Member,
We understand your concern however this change will enable us to invest in further significant enhancements to our customer services..."

    I've gone back as follows...

    INSPECTOR SAMS

    Dear Customer Support

You have sent me, in response to my last on my part, a response which is exactly the same as one which is included on the previous messages enlosed within the body of the text.

Now I don't know whether there has been any actual human intervention on AOL's part. I suspect the responses I'm getting are driven by some automated process.

I do know what I think of AOL's "market leading support" that enables this kind of thing to happen

I also know of a few journals which would be very interested to receive a full copy of the email I have just receive.

As for the questions I raised, I'll have to concede that AOL will not provide me with direct answers. But I don't doubt for a moment what those answers actually are.

The customer will pay and not be reimbursed for any fault or delay on the part of AOL. That's the bottom line and that's an indication of the regard they hold their customers in.

    Regards

I'm following a pointless course. I've been with them 7 years now and it would be inconvenient to move, but nevertheless that's what I plan to do. All I have not decided upon is whether I wait for the first time I experience theneed to phone or whether I go right away.

Surely this whole thing has got to be a public relations disaster for them?

And if ISP's can treat their customers like this, then there ought to be some way of ensuring that customers can leave them but still keep their email address, in the same way you can keep a mobile phone number.

    Yes, and yes.

You don't just want to cancel straight away, you should contact AOL and ask for a MAC key, once you have this you can migrate to another supplier, you give your new supplier the MAC key AOL has issued, and then within 10 days you should be switched over, you will only be without connection for a couple of minutes, the time it takes you to realise the connection has dropped due to transfer and you inputing your new username and password.

Their - possessive pronoun (owned by them e.g. "They locked their car").
    They're - colloquial/abbreviated version of 'They are'
There - noun (location other than here e.g. "You can buy groceries there") OR adverb (in or at that place e.g. "They have lived there for years") OR adverb (to or towards that place e.g. "Go there at noon") OR adverb (in that matter e.g. " I agree with you there").

  • I was on to their phone line 3 times on Saturday, for a total of about 3 hours as I could not get on the web. Finally a Senior Techincian said it was the phone line (after it had been checked by someone else) and could take up to 4 days to fix. I was glad it was free to phone the helpline then. I finally got back onto the web on Sunday pm then I get their email about charging, me thinks its time to change ISP's, does anyone know how long after cancelling with AOL you can get back online with another provider?
