Of course you would expect a credit check on a credit card application! But you don't expect one on a mobile sim!

I would.
Some SIM plans are a £ a month (did I see 50p last week?). Others can reach £40-50, considerably more if there's a handset being supplied too.
Much easier for a company to say "credit product = credit check" rather than mucking about with arbitrary limits on certain products but not others.
