wrong tyre fitted

nearly a year ago i had two new front tyres fitted with Halfords. 3 weeks ago i went for a quick tyre check and got to know that my front tyres have wear on the inside and outer side in addition to alot of wear on the mid of tyre down to 3mm. when I have only driven 4000 miles since installing the new tyres.

I went back to Halfords local branch who wanted to replace the tyres as they though the other branch has not done the wheel allignements correct and therefore the tyres went really quickly.When they ordered the new tyres they figured out that i had different tyres than the ones on the vehicle. I had found a picture from a week after the original fitting and they proved that the wring tyres were installed. the ones ordered were 205 65 16R minimum rating required 95 but they fitted 205 60 16R 92rating. They then ordered correct onces but after checking once it was installed they had ordered 215 65 16R. they also wanted me to pay cost price of the two tyres. (the other branch wanted to offer them for no charge) but now i want to know what are my rights.

Why didn't you check that the correct tyres were fitted a year ago?

You have now quoted 3 different tyre sizes and two different load ratings.

Read your handbook and see what the correct tyres are for your vehicle.

Complain firmly about the errors they have made and insist they supply and fit a pair of the right size FOC.

If the correct size for your car is 205/65 16 then that is what you want. Check it. Preferably before they put then on. The other figure is the Load Rating.

A quick search on tyrerunner shows they will be 95 rated unless XL (extra load). They other variable will be the speed rating and it looks like that will probably be H(130 mph).

The biggest factors on tyre life is probably how you drive and the car itself. EVs are very harsh on tyres due to their weight and torque. Inflation is important. Ideally check weekly and follow manufacturer guidance.

Finally, tyre brand will be really important Many people just let the fitter fit any cheap rubbish they want to shift. Take time to research a bit. The fuel and wet grip ratings are a useful guide and you don't want to be dropping below a C on either

Would this not of been picked up in a service or MOT if the car is old enough to have one?

Why did you take a photo of the car showing the tyres a week after fitting?

I'd insist Halford fits two tyres of the manufacturer-approved size, with the correct load and speed ratings, entirely free of charge; provide a written wheel-alignment report; and refund any reasonable independent inspection cost if Halfords disputes the cause of the abnormal wear.

lots doesnt add up here, if the tyres fitted are 5mm lower profile and the alignment was done, why the high wear?

5mm with an alignment is going to make very little difference.

The tyre wear sounds like under inflation. Having a 92 rated tyre verse a 95 rated tyre would be the difference between 2.5ton and t 2.75 tons rating, so more of an issue when fully loaded. While the 60 verse 65 has greater implications switching to the 60 will cause your speedometer to read about 3% faster than your actual speed.

Personally I would not use Halfords, I always located a decent indie, the last one was recommended by a dealer. I get you want you money back, but 4000 miles and the tyres are dead?

On a sticker on my inner door, it lists 3 possible tyre sizes. The correct tyres for your car, is certainly the size that matches the rear tyres.

I changed the tyre size last year when I came across some cheap tyres.

Without knowing all of the details, it could be that the OP was inflating the tyres to the correct pressure for the correct tyre size, and the required pressures for the (different sized) fitted tyres might be different…
