I disagree It's not THAT niche to get the occasional cheque & I don't actually ask for them…

I do use a real bank for main banking - so can use their app or the local banking hub or a branch.
Technologically backward Nationwide is good for the Fairer Share & keeping the boomers happy.

It's clearly niche when it's "occasional", especially when it's a reason to say yes or no for a bank

Regardless of opinion, objectively it is niche - last year the clearing system processed 79m cheques, down 15.7% on the year before

In contrast there were 6.86 BILLION BACS (direct debit/credits like salaries) and 4.83 BILLION faster payments (including standing orders) and around 25-26 BILLION card payments

People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.

Simple solution: never log in to a bank account where someone can look over your shoulder. Applies whatever device or method you use.

From 5 other people in my wider family who seem to look to me for some sort of advice on banking, Nationwide is the only common bank across all 6 of us. We have all received the fairer share apart from the first year, with various degrees of prompting from myself. Two of them wont use the app at all, one person only uses it on an iPad, not a phone, and one older man was extremely frustrated by the refreshed website as he was familiar with the old one and had to relearn how to use it.

I've never heard a complaint about the app from any of them.

Now the 6 of us are still a very modest sample, but I'd suggest Nationwide knows they have a lot of steady-as-she-goes traditional customers, who don't look for change.

They used to frustrate me, because everything was middle-of-the-road, few if any leading products. The credit card for instance was good for purchases abroad, despite not appearing in the foreign card tables, but charged for cash withdrawals.

My view has changed somewhat with the advent of the fairer share, plus the £50 payment as part of the Virgin purchase. That middle of the road approach appears to work and I have made my peace with it. I keep the account, fund the regular saver, have a DD from the current account and a couple of CPAs on the credit card. Then I gratefully trouser the fairer share each year.
