Their internet bank may have recently had a tart up but still fairly basic (not unlike their app) but I'm fine using them only for the annual bonus but not for any real banking.
When I wanted to pop the occasional cheque in, I couldn't use the app nor my local banking hub nor a post office due to their legacy systems. When I arrived at a branch, i got shuved to one of their ATMs when staff member insisted that my Flex Account is a FlexDirect.
Nationwide - a good way to bank, I think not.

NatWest at least on android use face ID for things like new payees etc not insecure texts
Sam Vimes' Boots Theory of Socioeconomic Unfairness:
People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.

It is a fairly niche requirement though, you can either use another bank/app or ask for BACS payments rather than cheque, or just don't use nationwide and other people who want it will use them

It's not something that most people would need very often, however most banks have managed to add the ability to pay in cheques with their app.
I still get cheques occasionally, about every two years on averages. Normally it's just a refund of a few pounds from a utility company who make an error on my final bill. I think the last one was £2.31 from Plusnet.

They do but it offers nothing over and above using a card reader.
The problem I have with authorisation codes via text is that I have patchy mobile signal at home so they don't always work. More and more providers are using in app authorisations, be that biometric or regular, which is better and more secure than using texts but the card reader method I've used for around twenty years is also secure. I realise I'm in a minority in using them but it works for me so I'm grateful that providers still allow their use.

If you get a mobile phone that supports WiFi calling the you'll be able to receive text messages over WiFi if there is no mobile coverage.

It adds the security that you don't have with a stolen card reader, or indeed, a stolen card as half these card readers work for other banks

A stolen card reader compromises security? These arent programmed to only be used for your account! Indeed, Nationwide will just dish them out over the counter for free, no questions asked (even if you just asked for fresh batteries for your working reader ☹)

Card readers work with all the banks/accounts that use them (unless someone knows different), so one being stolen doesn't infringe security.
The token generator used by Clydesdale/Yorkshire Bank, now Virgin Money/Nationwide, being stolen could infringe security, but the thief would need to know the device PIN, as well as the other log in details.

The point of the comment is that app based security like fingerprint or face ID is much more secure - if someone steals OP card after shoulder surfing a PIN, they could potentially use it in any card reader to set up new payments, steal etc. I don't consider it a selling point to have a card reader as the process is much less secure even if it is better than SMS
