10 year old car but only registered with the DVLA this year?

There might be… I don't know how you can really check the history. Especially how to check if it is stolen and exported to the UK.
A friend brought his South African purchased right hand drive car back to the UK when he changed jobs (nice job where they pay for your car to be shipped over from Africa). The car had to have a new speedo fitted as well as changed emission components. If the car you are interested in has had to have similar changes, it should be OK although if fitted with a new speedo the mileage may not match the previous 10 year figure.
Being an import, when it came to sell it, the value was significantly less than an equivalent UK car. So beware of the potential value when it comes time to sell… ie don't pay anywhere near the same for one as a similar UK one.

Might not be an import as such could be previously registered in the Isle of Man or Channel Islands.

What does "as such" mean? Still an import, though almost certainly built to UK spec.

MOD white fleet has been leased vehicles for quite a few years at least going back to 2005 to my knowledge.

You've put the plate into https://vehicleenquiry.service.gov.uk and it comes back as "first registered" 10yrs ago and "first registered in UK" recently?
Then, yep, it almost certainly is an import.
I'm assuming it's RHD, MPH speedo, etc - but, of course, the instrument cluster can be changed easily, and many digital dashes are just push-of-a-button to change.
Is the V5C as fully populated as you'd expect for a similar age car? If it has a CoC number and the right CO2 emissions, then it was originally built to EU spec, so for an EU market - Republic of Ireland, Cyprus, Malta are all RHD - or adjacent such as Channel Islands or IoM.
If the CO2 figure is blank, then it'll be taxed on the old pre-2001 rates (assuming it's pre-2017), which split at 1550cc. Might be cheaper, might be pricier than if it was done by CO2 banding.
Could it be UK military? Perhaps. Depends on what it is, of course.
Ultimately… does it really matter?
It's a 10yo car. There's no manufacturer warranty questions.
It's in the condition you see it as being in.1 -
Could the car have been brought over from Northern Ireland and re-registered? I know it's not necessary to change the registration; however, there's also nothing to stop one doing so. If so, the MOT history etc. will only show for the new plate.

At least run a insurance quote before buying, or you might be in for a shock.

No, because NI is in the UK, so it'd have been "UK registered" from new.
NI vehicles are registered with DVLA in the exact same way as the rest of the country.0 -
Actually that's completely untrue. NI cars are registered with DVLNI, not DVLA. The MoT situation is quite different in Northern Ireland too - all tests are done by official government garages, there is a massive waiting list/lack of availability of test slots, and it is relatively easy to be granted an extension on the MoT to allow for this.
Some NI cars will show up on the gov.uk site when you check MoT history, some won't - there doesn't seem to be a pattern (I've not identified one, at least).
It is possible to replace the NI number plate with a GB one by putting the NI plate on retention (they are dateless, so they are sometimes worth something, but not much) and if the current RK of the car has a GB address you will be issued with an age-related (and area-related if possible) GB plate ie in the format LLnnLLL. (If the RK address is in NI, another NI-format plate will be issued).

Here's an example to prove it…
https://www.usedcarsni.com/2007-SEAT-Altea-1-9-TDI-Stylance-5dr-410496774
NEZ 7241 - shows up on vehicle enquiry as first reg'd 2007, year of manufacture 2007.
MOTs done in NI don't show up on MOT enquiry, but MOTs done in GB do, no matter if it's an "NI plate" or a "normal" one.0
