10 year old car but only registered with the DVLA this year?
I'm looking at changing my car soon and stumbled on a car that looked promising. When I checked the MOT history via the registration number it only has one MOT for Feb 2026 and only registered with the DVLA this year. Its a 2016 car with UK plates, can anyone suggest what could cause this?

Bought and used abroad and then imported - used to be common with forces personnel. The plate reflects the year of manufacture, not the year of first UK registration.

Is it a DeLorean?

is it a 16 (or 66 or 65) plate?

could also be ex mod. They do their own registrations, when it gets defleeted and sold retail it will get registered with an age related plate.

Imported car I would imagine.

Ex MOD. Excellent cars in general. When they dispose of them they keep the government plates.

Could also be a grey import of a used car from somewhere like Japan. It's quite common for dealers to buy used cars at auction in Japan, then ship them over here.
Depending on the make of the vehicle, and its origins, you might have difficulty getting parts from a main dealer or official distributor in the UK. If it's from outside Europe, then the part numbers can be different, and that's a good excuse not to help you.
If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.1 -
What make and model is the car?
Japanese imports tend to be models that aren't offered here but from the major Japanese manufacturers, while ex-MOD etc. cars are likely to be UK models.
There's a rule that makes it easier to import cars that are at least 10 years old, so it being a 2016 would be consistent with that.

Some insurers ask if the car is an import, so may narrow your choice of insurer.
