For the score from a credit reference agency, yes. Even getting the credit reports cost money, £2 per credit agency for a statutory credit report. But see this article to get free reports sometimes.

It's worth asking and also asking what might be available once you've cleared it. When I paid off a large chunk with a balance transfer last year they phoned me with an offer and then kept the offer open until after I'd cleared the rest of the balance. From a Virgin or other MBNA card you can do a balance transfer from your current account to clear an overdraft. They charge a bit more for it.

If you have two UK bank accounts or any other account that can do BACS transfers you can set up a series of standing orders to increase the amount of money going into and out of the Halifax account. Transfer from account A to account B then back to A. Or better from A to B to C and back from C to A so it's less obvious to a human.

    Thank you James.

I called and they have nothing to offer me at the moment, but told me to call back once the balance was cleared as they would most likely have something for me then.

Also, I thought Halifax card was MBNA, but it's not! lol.

Still thinking it might be best to clear the OD first. There isn't much difference between the interest on the OD and the CC and clearing the OD would make me feel sooo much better. Unfortunately, I only have the one UK bank account so can't switch around (also can't apply for another one as am not a UK resident).

Roll on payday so I can clear that balance!!

I have a credit card with £2,800 on, and a store card with £300 on, i would like to get these paid of as quickly as possible as i am a newly wed and dont want to spend the 1st 5 years of married life paying it off. Not sure how to go about sorting it out, can anyone help me please?
  • Hi,

My girlfriend has just been turned down for a 0% balance transfer credit card. Do the cards you transfer the balance of have to be in your name or would it be possible for me to take out a card and transfer the balance of her cc's on to them? I understand that the debt will now be in my name but we already brought a house together and are soon to be married.

Also, is it only credit cards you can transfer or can you transfer from an overdraft?

    Thanks

bluesfan, 0% balance transfer card, try Virgin if you don't already have one from them. Alternatively you can go for a 0% for purchases card and put as much as possible of your daily spending on the new spending card. As you spend, make extra payments on the existing cards that matches the amount you spent, so you don't accidentally increase your borrowing.

kav-senses, there's no block on transferring to someone else's card. They will ask only for the account, not the name. The MBNA-based cards let you transfer a balance from a current account to the card, for a higher fee. Once she's had one or two cards cleared and closed, allow three months for credit records to be updated, then she may be able to get balance transfer deals in her own name to get the rest to 0%. The 0% for spending option is also available for you and later, her. Though just because one card provider has refused her, that doesn't mean all will. The typical limit for all unsecured credit limits combined today is around half of gross salary and if she's well below that she'll still have a fair chance of getting more cards to use for balance transfers.
