Flight ticket refund - Trip.com

We cancelled our return flights to Jordan, booked for early May ‘26, in mid-April because new Foreign Office advice said ‘do not travel’ to Jordan due to the Middle East war. This advice remained in place until early June. We had booked a tour in Jordan with Intrepid Travel, who in mid-April , cancelled all Jordan tours for the whole of May. This prompted us to immediately cancel our return flights, which were booked, unfortunately, via Trip.com - they will only say that they have requested a refund from the airline, Royal Jordan, this automated reply comes from a chatbot and there’s no actual customer service you can call! This cannot be right, and should be outlawed. Meanwhile, we have no idea when or if we will receive a refund. The airline won’t talk us either, referring us back to Trip.com. Moreover, the circumstances, we are seeking a cash refund, not a voucher, due to the reason for cancellation, but we are unable to make this argument as there is no one to talk to. What can we do to take further action, other than having fruitless online messaging with Trip.com’s chatbot?!

Did you speak to anyone at Trip.com before cancelling the flights - I am presuming they were not booked together with the trip as part of a package holiday?

If you cancelled without talking to anyone, you may have lost the cost.

Also to add if it was flight only, nonrefundable and there is nothing in the terms and conditions about cancellation due to foreign office advice this might be one for your insurance.

That maybe the case now but they haven’t said if they just decided to cancel without even trying at the time to check with trip.com what the situation was.

For an active booking there should be a speak to person option via the bot.

Yes and no. I contacted Trip.com , ie, their chatbot, to explain the circumstances and why we could not travel to Jordan - which was because of the Foreign Advice not to travel there. All I got was ‘we are requesting a refund from the airline’ But nothing had happened since mid-Apriland there’s no actual Customer Service to complain to.

What happens when you try their customer support Call us option? I normally keep repeating speak to human to any Bots until they give up on me and put me through.

Doesn’t always work, sometimes you get cut off but worth a try if you haven’t already.

Unless Royal Jordanian were offering a waiver for your travel dates at the time you cancelled, the fare rules of your originally purchased ticket would apply

The cheapest fares are non-refundable…although the airline may pass some taxes back to Trip…not sure what Trip's service fees are, they may be more than the refundable taxes or you may still get a little bit back

Might be worth checking the documentation for your original booking to see if it includes the fare rules of the ticket

Also worth checking your travel insurance policy to see if they are likely to cover

Trip.com is just a middle man here, you requested cancellation (the reason doesnt matter) they passed that to airline which will likely cancel and not give you any money back as it was non refundable ticket - quite possibly only airport charges will be refunded with value of £50 - but this will be taken by Trip com based on their service fee for cancellation.

Travel Insurance is the only option here.. especially as you've heard nothing so far.
