Yes, if your reason not to travel manifested during the policy term, eg you are hit by the proverbial bus, then better policies would respond. You wouldnt have a claim if either the only reason for wanting to cancel was the inability to get another policy and/or if the illness occurred after the policy had already lapsed.

Travel isnt really my thing, not covering trips occurring beyond the policy boundary is for now still a minority clause so just check the policy wording before buying

Thanks, I now understand the type of reason in which the policy would cover cancellation of travel beyond the policy end date. I've checked the policy wording for several travel insurance providers, but none of them mention this scenario.

We have a cruise booked and paid in full, but I knew it was a risk to book it after the policy end date and took that risk. I will just have to cross my fingers and hope that the insurer will renew my policy. I have another 3 months to worry about that.

The policy was set to auto renew by default. I cancelled the auto renewal and CPA as I always do. Now I'm wondering if I would have been better to leave it to auto renew. I do understand that auto renewal is not guaranteed, but I'm thinking I may have had a better chance of it renewing if I had left it.

Can you reinstall the annual renewal? For much simpler things you certainly can, but for this I have no idea. You should be able to log in to your account and see if it is easy to change. If not, you could always try contacting them to see if it can be done.

Yes, I thought about that, but there is no online account. The policy just comes by email and you have to phone for everything else.

However, I have an added complication. The OH is due to get a partial knee replacement next month. I did declare that he had knee pain when I took out the policy. I am aware that you should call them whenever there is a change of health, but I haven’t contacted them since, as it didn’t make sense to me to phone them about every single GP appointment.

I was going to declare it after the surgery and recovery time, which is before the policy renews. I would expect that, if I called them and asked if they could reinstate the auto renewal, they would ask if there was any change in health or anything they should know about. I feel between a rock and a hard place.

I absolutely understand your point about non-cost-effectiveness for the insurance companies, and I already guessed that's why it's a blanket "no" from all companies.

Seeing that your holiday is 3 months away, is there any mileage in trying to get a formal diagnosis even if that means paying and going private?
