ROG2...your post about something addictive in the food...I really believe this is true! Anyone got any ideas on a detox diet for the cats??
I certainly hope it isn't true, fc. The mind boggles. :eek:I am NOT, nor do I profess to be, a Qualified Debt Adviser. I have made MANY mistakes and have OFTEN been the unwitting victim of the the shamefull tactics of the Financial Industry.

At least your cats actually eat the small squeaky things - ours catch them and bring them to us, as presents   - and often they are not quite dead.
The worst thing is that they will do the same with frogs and slow worms, and I can not convince my wife that a slow worm is not a 'poisonous snake'. :rotfl: :rotfl:
So far from ours I have had a live sparrow (which flew at me!) and a live frog:eek:  (I HATE frogs!! froggy made it all the way into my bedroom!!! )
He hasn't grasped the idea that you have to kill them!! Although he liked the sparrow as he was sat meaowing next to it when it took off, it was like catch the birdy all over again :rotfl:Current debt - £16,300Debt at worst 17/03/2011 - £18,067.62:eek::eek::ANot going anywhere else, ever again :A0 -
My cats loved the Tesco own stuff, in the black tins, and didn't like the expensive stuff, so I was lucky. But hey, they will eat anything if they are hungry. Cats can be so stubborn, and because we love 'em so much we spoil them.
Be strong, don't let that cats bully you!!LBM - March 2007

I would be really interested if you could post and let us know how it goes weaning them off the expensive food. I have tried 4 times to get my Benny off of Whiskers pouches onto something a bit cheaper but no joy, if he doesn't get what he wants he hisses and wails and on the second day starts to bite and scratch anyone in the house and rip the furniture.
He completely refuses to eat anything but the ones in gravy (pouches), he sniffs any other food and walks away and will not eat it no matter how long it goes, I haven't let it go longer than 3 days without him eating as I end up bitten, scratched and feeling awful that I am starving him. Normally he is a lovely placid cat who does not bite/scratch etc. Does anyone think it is withdrawal from the preservatives/additives in the whiskers that is making him go loopy and act badly?

Not sure if this is true but my local cat rescue told me that cats learn what behaviour gets them rewarded....ie if having a hissy fit brings back nice food he will do it:rotfl:0 -
I work for a cat sanctuary and it is true that cats will get used to something in the end. They try it on all the time, try not to give in to their cute little eyes and miaow-ing, it's a game!! I would try alternating day's or meals. Breakfast give them their favourite, then dinner give them the cheaper option. They will be hungry because it's been a while since breakfast.LBM - March 2007

My cat, Wrinkles, was a bit picky with his food as well, but did manage to get him off the expensive stuff.
He always has dried food in a bowl and I just mixed the expensive stuff with the cheap stuff for a few weeks. I reduced the amount of expensive stuff in the mix each week until he ate the cheap stuff on its own.
He was quite fussy with the pouches at first, but I just put it out for him anyway and he ate them when he wanted to. He is now fine on good old Tescos own brand, instead of Iams and Whiskas.Lightbulb moment: August 2007. Debts totalling £15,634.

Interesting reading, this thread!! I thought I was the only one who overspent on food for the puss, but now I see that I am in good company...!:rotfl:
My cat (male, will be 10 in June this year) likes to dine on Whiskas and Felix pouches, plus the Felix foil trays (even worse value for money!) and Sheba (the little rounded-bottom tins, which are so hideously expensive that he only gets them at Christmas or on his birthday!!), plus Whiskas/Felix dried food. He also likes the occasional tin of tuna...;)
However, his food is the one thing that I am unwilling to compromise on. My view on this is that it is my decision to try to cut corners and save money, therefore if my food choices are affected by this decision, that is fine. However, he has not made the decision, and therefore his standard of living should not be affected (daft, I know!). However, I always try to buy a "decent" standard of food for us when it is on offer (I buy a lot of reduced food, but generally try for organic/free range/"finest"/premium food), and I now try to do the same for him (taking advantage of Asda/Tesco reductions for the pouch food, stocking up on John West tuna when their multipacks are BOGOF, etc). To be honest, there is usually a supermarket somewhere selling the premium foods at a discount, and I stock up when I see it, so with careful shopping I suspect that I don't actually spend much more than I would do if I bought the cheaper brands as and when I needed them.
Anyway, as has already been said, he is my "baby" (no kids!):o and the love and affection he gives us is more than payback for the cost of his food. Plus, I wouldn't relegate him to the cheaper, supermeat food, before I was willing to give up our occasional bottle of wine/bar of chocolate/takeaway.:p

A week of trying Tesco own brand-and a week of following Molly (fussy cat) around the house with kitchen roll, scrubbing brush and vanish! So although this week has been expensive on the cleaning front - I actually 'think' I'm winning on the food front. There's been progressively less left anywhere, and less being thrown in the bin after sitting around for a couple of hours. I'm on a training mission now, good thing I'm unemployed at the moment0
