My car is 12 years old, I don't have any reverse sensors, lane assit, blindspot, speed assist- I use my eyes to look - done it for 25 years. Bit worring if drivers rely on this and that whatever fails - sorry my assist didn't tell me.

    "'blind spot monitoring'"

Does that replace looking over your shoulder?

"I've never really understood it, more a person looks at the dashboard, the less they are paying attention outside the vehicle"

Like having to carry out many functions on one of those stupidly large touchscreens? It doesn't take long to remember/know where physical knobs and buttons are located to operate without distracting from looking out of the windscreen.

I think manufacturers are trying to out size each other. What next, a 20" high definition t.v. bolted to the dash?

No, it is just an added layer of safety

That is probably quite unusual - Reverse parking sensors were pretty much standard on every car I have had in the last 20 years at least. The cars were also a mixture of higher end and lower end. My daughter has a 12 year old Peugeot 208 ( just a standard small car) and that has rear sensors.

Our 2011 Fabia had them but the 2018 Vauxhall Insignia didn’t.

I had a second hand Toyota Previa - registered 2003 , which had them, but maybe they were fitted later.

However Copilot tells me that the first mass market car to have them was a Toyota Prius, from 2003 onwards., so maybe they were original.

You should have heard the complaints when rear view mirrors were made compulsory in 1978 - what's wrong with looking over your shoulder........

I wish I could choose which driver aids to turn off - Peugeot seem to give me all or none. The speed recognition gizmo is OK 75% of the time but as others have said - it will sometimes pick up the sign from a side road or service road and tell me to do 30 on a 70 dual carriageway. There's one place where it seems to think the limit is 96 (it's 30) and I can't fathom what it is seeing or why the computer accepts a non-standard value. So the answer is always - use the bonging as a clue but don't rely on it.

I need to think of something new here...

Luckily I can turn the speed alerts off on my car but the Auto braking is a problem that I am looking to solve.

Looking over your shoulder to check for obstructions in your blind spot can now get you with a distracting audible
warning to keep your eyes on the road ahead. That has been commented on from several car review channels
where the sound is more than a gentle alert that makes you look at the dashboard to see what the problem is
instead of looking where your turning into or traffic to the side of you.
