Couple of years ago I asked U.U for credit refund built up due to me doing numerous DC transactions every month for TSB monthly rewards, refund was processed without hesitation.

If they won't refund a credit balance then raise a complaint and escalate as necessary

Surely first would be wanting to establish why they think the OP needs to pay £42 a month, if they are using wildly inaccurate estimated figures for the next 12 months all the OP needs to do is contact them and tell them, at which point they would revise the DD downwards.
Also, personally, if I had a £220 credit I would much prefer to pay 12 lower monthly payments anyway, rather than essentially pay the £220 back over the next 12 months.
