Probate time - Any chance in under a week?

South west of England.

Just doing probate for my mums estate (A house worth 140k), NO savings, NO debt, NO bonds nothing. The house was left to me and my partner. The will was done through a solicitor. I filled out the forms today and sent them off (next day).

What do you think the turn around will be before the court sends it back? I've seen some day 4-8 weeks while others say 18 months (But im guessing that's a complicated estate). However, i've also seen quite a few saying "I had it back within a week because it was a very simple estate"

I just want it done and dusted and the thought of sitting here, waiting still not being able to grieve properly is killing me.

i know NOBODY can tell me for sure but im just asking for 'chances'.

Is the whole "I had it done within a week" likely/even possible or is it just ppl saying it on here and reddit for 'likes' etc.

Thank you for any help.

Hi @Briansteen50 - first of all, so sorry for your loss.

I don't have any inside track on their processes or workload but I would say that under a week is very unlikely.

We had a relatively simple probate application at the back end of last year (with a surviving spouse so no property ownership changes or tax implications etc) and we got it through in 5 weeks which I felt was quite fast. Bearing in mind 10 years ago I did the same for my own parents and it took 4 months. Going via a solicitor should work in your favour as one would hope no mistakes or anything that needs double checking.

I'd be interested to see how long it does take though, please keep us informed.

    ty! Will do

Also, we did it ourselves but honestly, it so so straight forward. Especially with the HUB that laid out exactly what we needed to do, what they neded from us etc. Hopfully there wont be ANY mistakes :)

    Sorry for your loss.

In terms of grief, it's an ongoing process and although wrapping up the practicalities like probate gives some closure, I would encourage you to allow your grief to be separate from probate as much as possible. They are things over which you have little control.

You might see it like this: you've done the probate work and submitted the forms so you now have a pause while that is processed in which you could sit with your emotions.

My cousin did her Mum’s and got it back within a week, in Cumbria if that makes a difference, and her dad is still alive. But I have no idea how ‘simple’ the will was.

Thank you. I am trying. My brain is VERY much mush at the moment. We've had nothing but trouble since she passed with her funeral. (very, very long story) and my brain just can't 'rest'. It's focusing on "Whats next" but more "What will go wrong next" due to the problem with the undertakers. it's still firmly in that mode. I will try though <3 thank you for your kind words :)

    EDIT: For spelling errors.

Yes, we did my Father-in-law's probate in a week, we filled in the online forms on a Friday, sent the will off by recorded delivery on the Monday, and got the grant of probate on the Saturday.

It is possible. We're in the west country (Wiltshire).

What is your plan for the house? If you intent to keep it then there is no real rush to get probate.

100% keeping. I live in it already. We moved in when we were taking care of them for the last 2-3 years. as I say there's no real hurry but except I just want to do it and get it over with. As i say in OP I can't relax and grieve at the moment.

In which case there is no real urgency in obtaining it, so try not to stress over it.
