Gym contract
I’m looking for advice about whether I can reasonably cancel my Gymbox membership early due to safety concerns and poor handling of a theft incident.
Recently, someone was allowed into the gym on a trial membership using fake details entered online. Gymbox apparently did not verify their identity or request photo ID before granting access.
During that visit, goods worth around £2,500 were stolen from me. The police were contacted, but because Gymbox had no verified details for the individual, there was very little they could do.
After this incident, I told Gymbox I no longer feel safe using the gym and requested immediate cancellation of my membership. I explained that I don’t think it’s reasonable to continue paying premium membership fees when security procedures appear so weak and management has not properly addressed my concerns.
Gymbox refused my request and said I remain tied into the contract until September 2026.
I’m trying to understand:
- whether I have grounds to terminate the contract without penalty,
- whether Gymbox may have failed in their duty of care/security procedures,
- and what practical next steps people would recommend.
Has anyone dealt with something similar or successfully exited a gym contract due to safety/security concerns?

Safer to leave the stuff in your car than in the gym, gyms are notoriously bad for stuff getting stolen. I leave my keys in the lockers but you've made me reconsider now.

The gym will definitely have CCTV - I would question why the police are not investigating. Are the items insured on your home insurance?

You don't have an implied right to terminate your contract for this reason (and anyway I'm not aware of any principle that gyms need to get photo ID for everybody entering the building).
Surely the simpler solution is to stop taking valuables into the gym?

They are very unlikely to have CCTV in the open changing area that gymbox gyms (and similar) have, (this is also the area where lockers tend to be...) would you want cameras watching you get changed and for that footage to be recorded? If it was, I'm pretty certain that certain websites would host it, and some would view it for "enjoyment"...
I imagine the items include a laptop? Personally I never take any valuables to the gym - but if you tote your laptop around and go before or after work then it's a bit unavoidable.
Most gyms have signs up that you leave stuff in the lockers at your own risk, and they are not responsible.
Edit: OP as galling as it is, I don't think you can get out of your contract early for this.

Our gym has CCTV in the changing rooms covering the locker area only. I thought this was quite normal.

Like car keys? Probably worth well over £2,500

Yes, probably. I mean, they won't be able to do much with mine as the car will be parked at home…

It depends where the lockers are... The gymbox I used to go to had them next to the benches where people change - rather than outside in a communal area.
The gym I go to now has lockers in the changing room and outside in the gym area. The two other gyms I've been to in between the current gym and gymbox have both had them in the changing rooms.

I would be a little surprised if the police weren't interested if a car was stolen.
