I then tried purchasing an esim from Airalo But Airalo say that my devicd is not esim compatible.

When I open the Airalo app it says Your device doesn't support eSims
Also when I open Sim manager on my phone it shows only the SIM i am using (a physical sim). There is no esim option.

What model number (SKU) does your phone report? On my Motorola it's under Settings - About phone - Model which gives detailed model info including the model number / SKU.

The fact that there is an IMEI2 means that the phone has a second SIM capability and on that model it's an eSIM.
Can we see a screenshot of the SIM manager page (with any phone numbers redacted)?

There is a version of the A17 that can take dual physical SIMs, rather than one physical SIM and one eSIM; I'm having trouble telling them apart from their model names sadly, but maybe you've got one of those?

How would I find out? GiffGaff are being useless at helping me though they did confirm in a message before I purchased that it would support an esim.
