Motorpoint & haggling??

Hi

I am after a Ford Focus 1.6 LX 5 dr hatchback (hopefully in black) .
The cheapest place by far seems to be Motorpoint at £7999 for 07 plate with around 12K on the clock.

I have a peugeot 307 1.4 LX (AC) 5 dr to exchange with 96 K on the clock, full service history, MOT till Oct 08 and next service in 7K miles. The body work is OK few dents etc you would expect on a family car.

I was hoping for £2300 for the 307 and maybe knocking some of the Focus too. Am I being optimistic??

Do Motorpoint haggle on their prices at all? Is my trade in price too high?
Any advice would be great
Thanks

Motorpoint will give you a minimal and obscenely low trade-in value. They are not really interested in taking them, hence the low offers. You'd really be much better off by selling privately.

As for haggling I'd be amazed if you managed to get anything out of them, but don't let that stop you trying after all it's all part n parcel of the fun n games when buying a 'new' car.

What year is the 307, then maybe we could get an idea of value ?

Thanks for that, your right they offered a pitiful trade in price.

    The 307 is a 51 plate.
I can't really sell it privatley as it needs some work doing on it that I'm not mentioning to the Garages (new gear box).

    Thanks anyway

In that case you're expecting FAR too much for the 307.

In average condition as yours sounds you could expect £2K max and that's without knowing about the gearbox problem !

Thanks, I was only going by what I have read on the valuation websites.

A Ford Dealer offered me £2K yesterday without much pushing, it just gave me hope of a bit more! That was against a 1.6 LX with alloys and front fog lights with 13K on the clock at £8495.

Not bothered about alloys etc just want AC and a CD player!

Thanks for your help.......the search goes on.

Without the dents it's worth £2,100

Oh and Motorpoint don't haggle. The price you see is the price you pay

    For age and mileage:

    Trade-in values:

    Clean Condition £2,175
    Average Condition £1,875
    Below Average Condition £1,575

The above is from AA website and is adjusted for the mileage (it does that after you select the exact model and year). I've found that Motorpoint's trade-in values compare almost exactly with this, as both use Glass's Guide database. We've used Motorpoint several times so can verify this.

    Have a look:

Trade-ins at Motorpoint go straight off to car auctions anyway.

Thanks for the info, thats the lowest valuation I have seen.I looked at the glass valuation via vauxhall site from links in the forum and on whatcar and some other sites that I got from here.

Even at that lower valuation, Motorpoint didn't come close, seems Ford offered me a good price but it doesn't hurt to push them for a bit more.

I will see what some more places offer me tomorrow.

    Thank you all

Go on then, how much did they offer if you don't mind me asking.

I fancy a new car & would be interested to know.

What age was the Focus that Ford offered you £2k against?

I suspect it was older than the Motorpoint one. Hence overpriced. Hence higher trade-in offer.

Phone the Ford dealer up and ask them what the straight cash price would be for that Focus. It will be less. Maybe £500-£1000 less.

The Ford dealer wouldn't want your trade-in to put on the forecourt and would pass on to 3rd tier motor traders or local car auction at that age/mileage, so they will undoubtedly be assuming Glass's Guide values as well.
