A message on social media would certainly show some goodwill though.
"Due to a till failure over the weekend of [insert dates], customers will have been charged more. Please call in with your receipt and we arrange a refund". Or something. Yes many won't bother but at least it is acknowledging the mistake.

Being the cynic that I am I suspect it would probably result in more calls from people who have never been to one of their restaurants claiming they were a walk in and paid cash.

Well yes, hence the requirement to provide the receipt. At least its admitting the issue and may give some goodwill. As it stands hundreds of people have been overcharged.

Malfunction 🤦♀️🤣
So it adds a extra tax.
Report & go back for a refund of all taxes.

Absolutely report the issue.
If this was a one-off malfunction that's never happened before then why did the manager say "all restaurants do this and that it was a requirement"?
Every generation blames the one before...

As previously stated… they have no idea about tax, dont look at receipts in detail, probably not told about changes to the software if it didnt change how operators use it and so just making stuff up to get rid of a customer.
