Old bloke locator?

Thank you one and all. Very helpful. I'll have a go on sharing location on Google Maps first, then maybe try one of the other suggestions.

You could also put a tracking tag on the mobility scooter

As the OP and his wife both have Samsung phones, the Samsung Smart Tag 2 might be a better option (if there's even any need to track the scooter):
This reviewer preferred the Samsung option.

As an additional tip, Waze is an excellent car satnav. It is free and used by thousands, it warns you about everything from potholes to police camera vans, or anything other Waze users want to notify everyone about. It is from Google and I guess is where the traffic information on Google maps comes from.

I was going to suggest a chipolo, attached to your keys, mobility scooter... I've got a couple of loops and two cards on various things - all rechargeable rather than needing batteries being replaced.
They're also mega handy when I've got my keys, but can't find my phone, as I can get the phone to ring by clicking the button on the loop to make it ring

You are technically right, I was using mobile for smart phone because they are so ubiquitous that I was not even thinking about dumb phones.

They are useful tools but not in this case, they need a phone connection to maintain location so they become a pointless addition as the phone would serve that function anyway and without the phone they stop working (unless the OP is on a high traffic area and uses one of the Google Find Hub more versions rather than the legacy models).

The ones linked to use Google Find hub, they're not legacy models. It depends on where the OP is going though - currently they're using share location via Google maps, so I'll presume it's not wildly off grid.

They require another Android phone with the feature enabled if the main phone is not connected and often because of the way privacy is set up they usually need 3-10 to pass before they will signal a location. It is not nearly as aggressive as the Apple Find My system in location sharing.

They work with both iPhone and Android.
Have you used a current generation chipolo card or loop?
Edit: I was just suggesting a device that is easy to carry, compatible with iPhone and Android and which works well for me.
