Help my phone hasn’t been backed up

You may want to say phone you currently have… and what you have for a laptop… and the new phone… otherwise it's difficult to offer advice without making assumptions.

Some cables are for charging only and so won't work even though both plugs fit. Finding a good cable can sometimes be very frustrating.

With an Android phone you may need to tap something in the notification bar (on the phone) to allow it to connect rather than simply charge.

With the laptop, if it's Microsoft Windows, it should play a chime sound when it successfully connects and maybe pop up a window.

If neither phone nor laptop acknowledges in some way, visual or audible notification, try another cable.

No comment for Apple products, but the experience should in theory be better.
