personally with the mini splits I have (lg) i find the heat drafty because it’s forced air vs convection but maybe that’s just me

Definitely depends on your liking, as it's forced air it travels so you don't end up having one hot side and one cold like with radiators.

But I guess worth keeping in mind as in winter months my one runs 24h a day, so it's like having a fan on gentle mode through the day.

Do you modulate yours at all? I would hope to take advantage of getting heat into the fabric of the house with a TOU tariff (Agile or IOG) and even, in the shoulder months, a bit of spare PV on those clear winter days.

I was on Agile over winter and on 90% days price/kWh was almost the same all day outside of 7-9am and 16-19. So had it running at like 22°C all day with 18°C between 16-19. Now on cosy so much easier to set it once and forget, but i'll go with something like 18°C during 16-19, 21°C through the day and 23°C during 4-7, 13-16.

A lot of variables to take into consideration, I enjoy hot mornings at 7am, but not so much at 4pm, but then my cheap rate is 10p and the peak rate like 40p. COP drops from 4 to 3 when there is a jump in preset temperature - but with big price differences it can be ignored. 4-7am is always the coldest so again COP is lower, 13-16 the warmest so COP highest..

Sorry for the late response, A2A is very good and did cope in winter but only in the rooms that it was installed in, living room and bedroom. I did not have any other heating source from October until January (long story ) and all was fine.. it did get down to 4C in my bathroom though! I barely heat upstairs at all as I sleep with my bedroom window open whatever the weather

Thanks. But 4C!? I think on posts about heating we need to know whereabouts people live and the type of house. My south coast terrace never got below 16 even when I didn't use my GCH, so I'm hoping A2A will cope fairly easily. :-) I keep my bedroom window closed during the coldest weather though, but the door open. A MVHR unit in the bathroom helps keep the air fresh.

mini splits are bad for this and I wouldn’t recommend. Perhaps a whole home ducting will be better but I wouldn’t install mini splits for heating - having done this myself it’s just cold feeling due to the forced air.

I wonder what's size is yours?

We have 3.5kW Daikin and 40m2 per floor, end of terrace, 90s built - getting all the sun near Dartford and is enough to heat the entire house. The downstairs open layout is enough to heat upstairs, no house extensions, square shaped floor - and even bathroom upstairs never got below 18°C (downstairs upped to 22°C during colder spells). Max usage was I think 13kWh/day with January average of 9/kWh.

I live in the sunny SE, I had no heating or hot water for almost 4 months over winter due to an issue with my ASHP install being delayed. I had removed my hot water tank to clear out my airing cupboard to facilitate removal of my chimney to create space for my larger new water tank..as I said its a long story. I like a cold bedroom so did not use the upstairs A2A as it is in the bedroom so no heating used upstairs for months.
