Jersey anyone?
I’m have a rolling £5.99 p.m. SIM only deal with Lycamobile, payable by DD. Lyca piggy back on EE of course.
We’ve just had a break in Jersey. When we landed, my iPhone changed from ‘Lycamobile’ to ‘Sure’ network in the top left corner. However, throughout the whole 5 nights I was unable to make or receive any calls. Neither my UK or EU Roaming plans worked, because apparently Jersey is classed as ‘international’. I’ve never had this issue before when travelling anywhere outside of the UK.
So Lyca told me by email I’d need to buy credit, top up, i.e. PAYG. I added £10 but that didn’t work either. Thank god the missus phone worked ok, she’s with Lebara (Vodafone?). The whole episode was hugely frustrating and I’m currently trying to get my £10 refunded.
Multiple attempts to call both UK landline and mobile numbers always resulted in this message: ‘the number you have dialled has not been recognised’. Now I know Lyca is cheap but surely my phone should have worked to some degree?
Does anyone have experience of anything similar in the Channel Islands?

Since the Channel Islands are neither in the UK or EU, their regular roaming will not apply. So calling a UK number would effectively be the same as calling an international number, so probably just as well you didn't get a call connection.

Correct, but I wonder how dialling a 01534 number is charged as normal from a UK mobile?

Depending on provider - Asda Mobile
and 1p Mobile
both have inclusive roaming in Jersey and Guernsey for when calling the UK.

I am with 1p Mobile and regularly travel to Jersey. The roaming works fine there.
Previously my partner was with O2, who include Jersey as part of their "EU" roaming. However she was charged for a call to Spain from Jersey. Complaining to the O2 call taker only resulted in them disagreeing with the O2 T&Cs and saying it was not included… and that only calls within Jersey and back to the UK were included.
Raising the matter with O2 management/supervision on our return resulted in the supervisor saying their system was wrong to charge for the call, the call taker was wrong, and offered an apology, a refund and a good will gesture of £10. However, she ditched O2 and moved to 1p… lesson learnt.

agreed, I was fully expecting to use my £10 credit at 80p p.m., but I couldn’t even make a call 😂
Nothing wrong with my phone btw, everything back to normal once we landed in Manchester.

well this is interesting FupN, I see 1p Mobile also piggyback on EE, so even more baffling why my Lyca SIM wouldn’t work 🤷♂️
Out of interest, what network shows on your phone upon arrival in Jersey?

"Out of interest, what network shows on your phone upon arrival in Jersey?"
Not sure, it might be JT (Jersey Telecom). I will be there again next month and will try to update this forum.

The phrase piggy back on top of is wrong. There is the virtual network (an MVNO) and a host network (an MVNO) (in this case EE)
An MVNO can operate in a number of ways. For example, 1p mobile is essentially just buying EE service on bulk and passing on some of the savings.
Other MVNOs just use the host network 's frequencies (sometimes not all of them) in the UK but have their own core network. They may or may not utilise the home network's frequency or service when roaming and may or may not offer all the facilities that the host offers.
Lycamobile, has it's own arrangements for roaming outside the UK.

Virtual network MVNO and a host network MNO for anyone wondering ;)

Did you miss the start of my post where I explained that ?
