That is the registered office for the Network Plus group of companies, not exactly a surprise that there are many with that name there…

They do not fit smart meters because they are not working directly for an energy supplier but for the meter owners I would assume.

The energy companies manage the meters but do not own them.

This way they can hit an area with a lot of out of date gas meters and replace them more cheaply than if they had to try and coordinate to replace electricity meters which may not even be out of date…

A smart gas meter fitted without the comms hub (usually powered from the smart electricity meter) will die rapidly as the battery fails after attempts to find the HAN.

it's Crazy. The industry is trying to go 100% smart and these people come along and deliberately state "it will NOT be a smart meter " .

    Screenshot_20260426-155733.png

Good news to hundreds of thousands of occupiers who are fiddling the gas meter by constantly substituting the meter for any old meter easily bought .If thats the case they get another ten years at least of a dumb meter with another new meter certification which then does not reach the criteria of being updated to a smart meter .They will grab at this as the last thing they want is a smart meter which knows when it's being fiddled .

I m only surprised that you are the only one to find this very odd.

This needs reporting to OFGEM IMO which I will do as it stinks to high heaven

These are just gas meters though, so will get swapped out anyway when a smart electricity meter is fitted.

I'd be minded to contact your DNO. With a smart meter currently for gas presumably I wouldn't get such a letter, but what if I were looking to change? I'm actually on a gas tracker at the moment which needs a smart meter.

I'm not sure the DNO is going to be much help, they neither own nor manage the meter…

Contact their current energy supplier if they want smart meters, or just let this replacement happen if they don't.

it will not be "just swapped out " in a lot of cases .The occupant will just refuse them access to touch it . There are so many who will battle to the end to keep a smart meter out of their property .Surely you know that ? Once they have in situ a brand new "dumb " meter which according to everyone in the industry and all the suppliers are not available and only a smart meter is available .Then along comes this cowboy outfit giving them another ten years at least with a dumb meter to do what they like with ? its crazy and underhand

    Indeed.

I'm not sure what the alternative is though, if this work is being undertaken for Cadent as part of the ongoing gas mains renewals then they would have to work with every different gas supplier to arrange a smart meter and that isn't going to fit in with their relatively fast paced replacement process.

Where did you dig up this figure of 6500 employee s ? .Best I can find is 1500 staff .,National Gas Metering use a large network of " trusted " contractors to do the meter exchanges. They are not direct employee s .

I dug it up by Googling the company and going on to their website

    Quite easy really
