Seamless switch?

My first time switching full fibre broadband today between Sky and Vodafone, both OR. I was under the impression that the switch would be seamless and pretty much instantaneous, is it his not the case?

I woke up to my Sky internet disconnected, as expected, so connected up my Vodafone router and it's not connecting to the internet. Should I contact Vodafone or am I jumping the gun?

I moved to Sky last week. Unplugged old router, CityFibre fitted an upgraded ONT, plugged in new router and worked fine.

Was without broadband for less than 15 minutes.

If it was a simple router replacement I would have expected to be without broadband for approx 1 minute.

@oldernonethewiser that's what I was expecting too, particularly as both are on the same infrastructure.

I'd get in touch with the new provider, just in case there is an issue.

Be interested if getting any kind of response out of Vodafone has improved since I was in this situation a few years back. Just getting through to someone who had any knowledge of my fault could take 40 minutes.

The underlying equipment connecting you to the fibre handover point is the same in that it’s Openreach but at that point they diverge, so unless VF have you set up your ‘account’ already , when your ‘data’ is switched from Sky to VF network its upto them if they give you connectivity

…it may be the convention is to do both at mid day , so Sky turn off your account and VF authorises your-account at a similar time to minimise downtime so perhaps Sky turned you off early , or VF are late in setting up your account, either way AFAIK , the usual thing is to wait until midnight of the day you were advised the change would take place before contacting the gaining provider, VF in your case ….

if VF had you set up in advance then as soon as your ‘traffic’ were sent their way you would be good to go , but VF may not set up your service in advance and wait until the actual day, so in answer to your question are you jumping the gun , Yes , if it isn’t on by midnight, contact VF .

I've been at it with them all morning, it doesn't help that I have very poor phone signal at home. Vodafone's response was I would have to leave it until midnight before anyone could look at it.

All sorted now. I followed the instructions on the Openreach troubleshooter after they had messaged me that it was active. They said I should power down both router and ONT, and shortly after doing so it eventually connected. This was around 2pm, it could've been just been a coincidence and VF were connecting the service their end at the same time. Now I just have to go round and change all my devices.

One thing I've found is I don't seem able to split the 2.4ghz and 5ghz channels on their router, I hope I don't run into issues with a couple of my devices that need to run via 2.4ghz.

    Glad you're sorted.

Rather than change all your devices, why not change the SSID/Password on your new router to be the same as your old?

Have the same problem with Plusnet Hub 2 router - some of my older devices would only run on 2.4GHz and kept disconnecting with the mixed channels - only way I could solve the issue was to shut off 5GHz wireless signal altogether.

Seems a retrograde step as the older PN Hub One router allowed me to give the two bands separate names.
