I think we can be pretty certain that it does separate at the chrome bezel - I cannot see the glass being released on its own, so I'd very much caution against pushing on it.
The plastic body needs to be exposed to allow it to be screwed to the ceiling and be wired up, so I just cannot see any alternative - the cover must come off.
Your idea of checking out the instructions for similar models is nifty.

Did a Google image search, and a similar LED type at Screwfix has instructions which seems to suggest it may be held by two clips on opposite sides, but there's no description and it ain't clear.
I'd suggest, tho', that if you gently try inserting a flat blade in between the chrome ring and plastic body - try it at different points - if there's movement, a gap begins to appear, it's very likely 'pop-off', so persevere.
If the cover is real glass, be very ready to hold it if it suddenly comes free.

Thanks for the further suggestions.
The whole thing is plastic, rather than chrome & glass. It was in the house when we moved in so I’ve no idea where it came from. I’m sure I took ok it off not long after we moved in 5 years ago and was convinced the whole thing screwed off, leaving the fitting & bulbs exposed but it simply won’t budge.I’ll have a go at prizing it off after visitors have left as I don’t want to leave them with a broken light or the exposed fitting.
