No problem to get a test, but will that be OK for DVLA when/ifthey require it (soon, from news ???????????????

Your eyesight has to meet the minimum requirement, whatever your age.

Better to get it checked now by an optometrist than by a police officer at the roadside!

No current rule says DVLA automatically make you take a routine sight test just because of age. At 70, and every 3 years after that, you renew your licence and declare that you still meet the eyesight standard. For a car licence that means, among other things, being able to read a number plate from 20 metres, with glasses if needed. The legal duty to tell DVLA is on the driver, not normally the optician. An optician would only usually contact DVLA if they thought you were unsafe to drive and would not report it yourself.

He almost certainly would as I doubt he'd offer you a consultation without taking some personal details.

So your worry is that although you know that your eyesight is absolutely 'fine' for driving, an optician might not agree and will dob you in to the DVLA?

Is the problem having to wear spectacles (or lenses) to improve your vision?

Nanny state taking away your "right" to drive?

Can you be more specific about "all the comments in the press"?

Or you could just go back and read your previous thread which asked the same question last September?

    Thanks @elsien

The whole premise of this thread seems to be that the OP knows their eyesight is not sufficient to meet the standard for driving. Rather than doing the right thing the OP is keeping away from Opticians and leaving DVLA in the dark.

Now we also know the OP might well be becoming forgetful.

Seems like time for the OP to hang up the car keys.

if your ability to see better would be improved by a visit to the optician why the hell would you not do it?

The driving test standard for eyesight is miserably, farcically low. Read a number plate from 20 metres away.

There is also a field of vision test - if you don't have sufficient peripheral vision, you cannot drive.

The reasons for these are, you would like to think, obvious…

Avoiding an optician because of the fear your eyesight is inadequate is, well, words fail me.
