  • We had a lovely meal out for our anniversary last week, and popped to the local for a few drinks afterwards. I could tell how long it was since we last had a night out with just the two of us as I found a facemask left over from Covid in the pocket of my going out jacket so its probably been five years since we had an evening out without the kids!

This week has been very busy at work with two massive meetings I was secretary to on Monday and Wednesday, one of which was on campus so I had to go in for. Yesterday I had to go to the dentist so its felt like a long one. Little cat went to be spayed on Wednesday and it now wearing the cone of shame, everything is healing nicely so hopefully in a month or so, when her fur has grown back, she will be able to start going outside. This will please big cat as she likes the doors open so she can wander in and out as she pleases and they have had to be shut so little cat didn’t get out and one of us had to let her in and out every time- she is known as ‘hokey cokey cat’ as she wants to be continually going in and out of the house!

Me and DS are off to see the re-release of Avengers End Game at the cinema tomorrow, we have both seen it on the TV but not at the cinema so it will be a good boy’s day out to go and see it. The budget won’t stretch to lunch out and due to the timing of the film we can’t really have it before we leave, so we will take a packed lunch to eat before we go to the cinema, so with taking our own snacks and drink, it has only cost me the tickets (£5 each) and my bus fare (DS has a monthly ticket for school) so a fairly low priced afternoon out!

  • Its been an odd sort of a weekend, highs and lows! On Saturday DS and myself went to see Avengers Endgame at the cinema which we really enjoyed. Whilst we were watching the film, I could feel my phone vibrating in my pocket so when we got out I rang my brother back and found out that Mum had collapsed on Friday night and was going dizzy and getting double vision. Dad had called 111 and they sent out a doctor who was not sure if it was a stroke, vertigo or something related to her PSP. Mum is now in hospital and although very tired, she is cheerful. They have done a CT scan and an X-Ray and she is due to have an MRI today to see if they can work out what is going on. Unfortunately there is no really good outcome, obviously a stroke is serious (although this does seem less likely as she doesn’t have many of the classic symptoms), if its vertigo, they cannot treat it as the medication would stop her PSP medication from working, and if it is PSP related, it means the condition has advanced. So far they have put her on aspirin as a blood thinner and we are now awaiting the last test and the consultant to advise us what is going on. Dad went to see her yesterday, but only stayed 20 minutes as Mum was very tired and weak, which is another worry if the hospital don’t think she is well enough to come home even with her carers in daily and Dad there to run round. I am being philosophical about it as there is nothing I can do one way or the other and getting all worried about it won’t do anyone any good, but I will feel better once we have some idea as to what is going on.

  • Poor Dad! He rang last night as he was walking down from the bus after visiting Mum in hospital. The consultant has confirmed that this is all down to the PSP and has said that Mum has months rather than years now and needs palliative care as there is nothing further they can do at this stage. I think me and my brother had come to this conclusion a few months ago anyway, but Dad had been holding onto the hope he might have a few years more (when you are in the position of being full time carer for someone you love you have to hold onto the hope, however illogical it might be). Although he was being all stoic and ‘Dad’ about it, I could tell he was upset. They met when they were 18, got married six months later and celebrate their 55th wedding anniversary next month so it’s a big shock for him. He is hoping Mum will still be here for the wedding anniversary and Christmas and that she can come home soon. She is very weak and unable to stand on her own, but they have carers in place and Dad is brilliant so hopefully the hospital will agree to it as everyone would rather she was at home than in a nursing home, but its not our call.

To add to the woes, ten minutes after that phone call, Dad rang me back. He had just got home and found their cat knocked down outside the farmyard. They had had the little cat for fifteen years and Mum is going to be heartbroken when Dad has to tell her about it. As Dad said, troubled come in twos and threes! I suggested he needed a large whisky, but knowing Dad he will make do with a couple of mugs of tea! Dad still has a spaniel for company whilst Mum is in hospital, but he is 14 years old so won’t be with us much longer! I doubt Dad will get another pet whilst Mum is still with us and so ill, but after that I think another dog would do him good and give him a companion.

We are going to see what the palliative care doctor says today and depending on that, my brother is going to drive north tomorrow and we will go across to the hospital for an hour to support Mum and Dad. There is precious little any of us can do one way or the other except be there for Mum and Dad.
