  • Thankyou everyone for your kind words and thoughts. I am going up to Mum and Dad's with my brother today. Dad is hopeful the hospital might let Mum come home today, but I am less convinced! Either way we are going to see her today and hopefully she will enjoy that. My manager was really good about it- I am taking today off as annual leave but she is looking into options with HR in case I need to take additional time off as compassionate leave.

  • We went and saw Mum in the hospital yesterday, she seemed very small and frail. She was a little out of it to start with, but came round and we took her in the wheelchair to Costa at the hospital and had a nice cup of tea. Mum didn't say much (she can't) but she was really pleased to see us all. They think she will be allowed home today so I am going to ring Dad tonight and see what the consultant said and if she is actually home. She was in a very good mood and giggling away as we teased Dad about various things so at least she wasn't upset with the situation, just desperate to be back home.

With Christmas coming up, I have been racking my brains trying to work out what on earth to buy Mum as a gift- what do you buy someone who doesn't need anything and has a few months to live? The idea I have come up with is to sponsor a donkey for her. She likes donkeys, you get a little certificate and soft toy and she will get little updates on the donkey so that seemed like a good idea and then just a few stocking fillers like some fluffy socks and her usual box of liquorice allsorts that are her absolute favourites. This seems like a plan, but I will run it past Dad first and see what he says.

  • Mum came home from the hospital on Friday afternoon and is very pleased to be home. Dad was told he would be entitled to some extra care as Mum is in palliative care, however trying to get through to the right person who can confirm what he needs to do and sign off to approve it is proving challenging. He was on the phone for four hours on Friday morning being passed from one department to another with no firm information and was planning to ring again today to see if he could actually get some answers this week. The NHS are brilliant in their individual bits, but none of them seem to talk to one another and as soon as it starts crossing over into the local council’s remit for home help and social care things completely fall apart!

We had a nice quiet weekend after the madness of last week. I took DD to church on Sunday so she could be presented with her Chief Scout’s Silver award from Cubs at the Harvest parade. She decided to leave Cubs and not go on to Scouts in July as it goes on until 9pm and her bedtime is 8.30 and many evenings she is wanting to go to bed at 8 because she is so tired. I knew she was missing it, but the leaders have asked if she wanted to go back as a young leader to support the Squirrels (5 and 6 year olds) from 5-5.45pm. We had a chat and she is going to start in a couple of weeks’ time. She loved being an ambassador at primary school and she does very well looking after younger children so this will be perfect for her, plus its never too early to volunteer and help out the community! I also got asked to go in for Armistice Day in November and do my World War I show and tell with the children, which is always a lot of fun- just hope I still fit into my uniform as its been a couple of years!

Glad that your mum is home. Sadly social care is broken. Hope your dad gets it sorted soon. Well done to your DD.
