Seeking advice re "Engine fault" message in Citroen Berlingo

Original poster here - some considerable time has now passed during which we have been through some major life events during which the car was of reduced importance. But we have now had the diesel particulate filter replaced.
We have learnt from this thread that a diesel car is not suitable for us and will probably at some point part-ex it for a petrol model.
In the meantime, I would be grateful for advice as to what we could do to reduce the risk of DPF problems before we do that.
Since retirement we use the car mostly for local shopping but also for day trips of up to an hour's drive away and occasional holidays. Some of the longer journeys can be partly on motorways.

One thing to watch is don't let the fuel level drop too low. On a lot of cars, if the fuel level drops below about a quarter full then the routine DPF regen cycle won't always work properly, even if you're taking it for a good run.
